MG TD TF 1500 - TD Restoration specialist?

Hi all, I am new to the forum and wondering if anyone could recommend a restorer anywhere in the U.K. I am looking to do a full nut and bolt restoration and upgrade the engine to fast road spec and 5 speed gearbox. Ideally someone that can do it in a number of months as opposed to years. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John.

Hi John,

I assume funds will be no concern! I would think that having the job done in "a number of months" will be difficult - especially for a full nut and bolt restoration.

Parts delays and body/paint work will take a few months of time at least. The chassis will go quickly - engine work, with all of the specialists there in the UK, should not be a problem. The assembly, interior, top, and electrical aspects usually slow the project.

You may have to adjust your expectations on the time frame and assume the role of "general contractor" for the job - unless you want to hand it over and have it delivered when complete.

Just be prepared to pay over $50,000.00 (or the Pound equivalent!) for that service. You will have invested over twice the going rate for a restored TD.

Best wishes to you with your project - I know you will enjoy the car once it is done.

Hi John,

Speak to Andy King. Just Google Andy King MG. He knows as much about MG as anyone else and has had special bell housing cast for 5 speed conversions. He has a huge stock of T series parts and was featured in one of the Discovery TV Car Restoration programmes. I have no connection to him what so ever apart from being a very satisfied customer.

The sort of restoration that you're looking for John costs around $120,000 AUD here & takes about a year. You should be able to find someone over there who can do it for a bit less but you sure will need deep pockets with no hope of recouping your outlay. Best of luck. Cheers

John,if I can be of any help give me a shout. I've got a 53 TD in Portrush used as a daily runner. ..... Chris

Someone put their hand up to sell their restored car to this gent for what it will cost to have his own car restored professionally. An opportunity "to make a killing". Wish he was in Aus.

John - for £50k you can have my TF1500 :-)
You won't find better and it is Southern Ireland so just a short hop down the road.

If on the other had you really want to get someone to do all the work then Laurence Bushnell in Northern Ireland did all the work on mine. Full nut and bolt. It is outstanding. Looking at the receipts though you are looking at 2 years

And yes the previous owner paid for all the work that I now enjoy :-)

Cheers

John, Your looking at least two years of restoration and a ton of money. Took me five years to do mine. Plus more aggravation than most people could handle. If I was you, I'd sure look at Daves offer, that's one nice TF he has and you would have something nice to drive now. JMHO. PJ

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated. I could do most of the work myself as its a simple car to work on but getting time is the main issue. The engine does need a rebuild and that was the main reason I started thinking about a complete restoration and some upgrades. Thanks.
