MG TD TF 1500 - TD TF brake shoes

Hi all

I am wondering who out there has any particular opinions on the stopping quality of the current brake shoes available for our cars. My TF currently has a set of "Power Tune" shoes. Bought off ebay I think. They are bonded. I have never been impressed with the stopping power of them. And, yes, my hydraulics are leak free and my shoes are adjusted.

I installed a set of riveted on shoes I had in my spares bin. The lining looked very different. Maybe with asbestos. No better braking however.

What about the shoes now sold by Moss and Abingdon? Has anyone had a good experience with them? Is there anything else out there that might be better?

I think it is fairly important to look at the shoes after a couple of hundred miles to see how much of the lining is actually making contact with the drum. There is often a lot of bedding-in required.

I have shoes relined by a local shop. I thought I was getting a good deal,, It was close by, and I didn't have to deal with core charges. They even radioused the surface to match the drums. The problem is that they used a material that is much harder than the originals, and it required a lot of pressure to stop.
I reciently took those off and replaced with the Moss shoes, which are advertised to be all new, and as such didn't require any core charge. The stopping ability was improved tremondously !!!!!! On an emergency panic stop all four wheels lock like they should.
I'm pretty sure that Abingtin Spares shoes will give the same results.

I put the Moss shoes on mine and have had good results with them. Because I didn't have the drums cut and left them as they were, I had to adjust the brakes about 3 times after use while the shoes settled in. I now have a hard pedal and no issues stopping the car. They will lock up! PJ

I had White Post re line my shoes when they did the master and wheel cylinders. They were completely soaked with fluid and ruined. The relined ones are bonded and at least 1/4" thick, maybe more. They do offer to radius them to your drums but I did not get that service done. Seen as I had no brakes when I got the car I can not tell you if there is any difference in their linings and the Moss ones. I feel the brakes work quite well and I have put about 100 miles on them. This spring I also adjusted the brakes and got 1 more click on the front but nothing on the rear. 100 miles is not really enough to break in the shoes but that 1 click on the frond did make quite a bit of difference. I think after another couple of hundred miles the shoes will be worn in sufficiently and I will get maximum braking.

Exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Thanks. With the current Moss brake sale, I'll try their shoes.

Tom, I forgot to mention that I filled the system with DOT-5, but the system was all new including the lines. PJ

Tom-
Give Abingdon Spares a call, as they will often meet Moss sale prices on similar items.
