MG TD TF 1500 - TD-TF Pedal Shaft Lube Fitting RHD

Does the pedal shaft on a RHD TD or TF have a grease fitting? Where? If not, how are the shaft and clutch pedal lubricated?

Thanks,

I think that only LHDs have a grease nipple.
RHD are not greased unless disasembled. Weird !
When I changed my shaft (TD RHD) I modified it to fit a grease nipple.

But there is also a wing cutout that allow access to the end of the shaft only on late TD (mine is). Historical experts will confirm.

Lonnie,
on RHD cars the clutch and brake pedal levers plvot on the shaft which is fixed in the chassis.
As the clutch pedal is next to the gearbox and the brake one next to the chassis there is no need for the complicated setup as on LHD cars.
I had to refurbish a mates LHD bushes and shafts and I am glad mine is RHD

I created an updated lube doc for TF (and most TD) to share with T-owners. The RHD pedal shaft was a puzzlement when I wrote the doc. Now I understand and will update the update.

George Butz replaced the LHD pedal shaft in my TF7211 when it was a bare chassis. Wasn’t an easy job. The LHD shaft in my wife’s TF681 needs to be replaced. It will probably be a worse job on the fully assembled TF than replacing the engine stabilizer bar!!

Moral: lube the pedal shaft via the grease fitting on the chassis near the rear edge of the left engine side panel. At least twice a year. Not much info in the Op Manual or WSM.

I identify changing the LHD pedal shaft as one of the most difficult tasks to be taken on any T-Series MG.

Fitting that blasted woodruff key is the pinnacle of meanness contrived by any MG engineer ... wife must have cut him off!

I did mine 50 years ago. Cut 2 spiral groves and added a couple of lube holes. Holding up so far, but I must admit there is a wee bit of play. Maybe its just the bushing? Doesn't matter. That's just as bad. Don't relish doing it again. But I do believe I saw someone advertising a spiral-grooved pedal shaft for sale; or was I dreaming?

Lonnie,
This is how I modified my RHD shaft to allow for lubrication, and never have to do this rotten job again. Shaft is stationary in the chassis tube, but the pedals have bronze bushings. Lubing them is a good idea.
You could fit a Right angle Zerk fitting and get away from trimming the wing shirt to get at it.

Cant remember where I saw this done but it seemed like a good idea, and it works.

If you are fabricating a new shaft it is adviseable to under cut the section that fits in the chassis so only two points, say 1/2" wide are full diameter. This will make it far easier to remove the shaft in the future.

I didn’t think of the above, but I did push the shaft in (RH drive car) with plenty of grease.
However, for ease of manufacture, I drilled a slightly larger through hole from either end. I then tapped each end and fitted a grease nipple at one end and a plug at the other end. If I think there is a blockage, I can remove the nipple & plug to push a rod through – awkward, but hopefully possible.

Can't let this topic close without some final comment.

About a year ago, I installed a set of DeClan Burns clutch rods ... perhaps one of the best TF investments I have made. I put 3,600 miles on my TF this past summer/fall, and these new clutch rods, made a noticeable difference.

It absolutely transformed my TF. And I suspect the problems with the pedal shaft will be a thing of the past, too. Gear changes are smooth and positive.

Great news, I am about to fit a set of Declan’s clutch rods.

Being RHD, I will need to drop the exhaust first, newly fitted so easy to do.
