MG TD TF 1500 - TD/TF Rubber Steering Rack Gaiters

Hi All,

Just checking on the correct number of bellows for the rubber steering
arm gaiters? (10 or 11?).

Any good tips to make the job of getting the gaiters over the large diameter end of the steering rack body easier ?

Cheers

I think I can count eight.

Some nearly-hot water and a touch of detergent usually works.

Matthew.

Matthew is right. The number is eight.

Thanks boys. The heating idea sounds with a try. Possibly a hair dryer
could also do the trick.( I suspect the ones supplied were more suited to
an MGB. Slightly smaller diameter with more bellows).

Matt.,

I really enjoy seeing the Abingdon Factory detail on this running TF chassis.
Brilliant !

The front shock absorbers in all over black paint, the Jubilee Clips on the
Rocker Cover to Carby breather pipe, the whitish body packing on the
chassis mount points, the correct wire clips on the water hoses , some exposed Cadmium plated bolting, the attitude of the wishbones(without full body load).etc.

Yes, just a pity those pics are not colour.

NO hairdryers!! Hairdryers apply heat unevenly and before you know it you may have damaged something. I first learnt this lesson when drying the paint on one of my WW2 Airfix aircraft kits as a kid. If you immerse it in hot-ish water then the heat will soak in nice and even.

Oh, and the photo shows a 1500. How can I tell?? Will answer in two days unless someone gets it.

Position or type of fuel pump ?
R WILSON

Nope.

The brass nut/setscrew on the Bypass Branch Pipe ? (added for a heater outlet).

Cut an old Jubilee clip or a piece of flat metal. Bend it into a ring that will just fit over the rack end. Slip inside the end of the boot and just slide it on.
Not necessary on a bare chassis but makes life easier on a built car.

Mathew,
Is the giveaway the heater return fitting in the branch pipe.
My 1250 has the later stat block and return fitting.
If not, I have got nothing.

Chrome grill (or rad slats).
R WILSON

Sorry - grille.

Rubbing rubber with Glycerine will make it more pliable. It has both a lubricating and a rejuvenating effect. I brought a rear wheel cylinder lever boot that was as stiff as a board back to a supple state with Glycerine. Cheers

The 1500 give away is the heater take off on the branch pipe as previously mentioned.
L E D LaVerne

I used a piece of plastic water bottle inside the gaiter, it allowed it to expand enough, then removed the water bottle piece.

Yes, its the branch pipe. I was curious to see how long that little challenge would last, and not very long at all so well done to Rob, Ray and LaVerne.

I am wondering if the very late 1250's also had the pipe since their production was mixed in with the early 1500's.

Cheers,
Matthew.

Not a lot of 1500's with disc wheels in the USA.
