MG TD TF 1500 - TD water pump issues
The engine on this car was rebuilt by someone a few years ago. I know this guy didn't rebuild the water pump. I also know this engine has had some major bunk engine work done before that rebuild. While re-installing the water pump pulley I've found that there is no clearance between the front stabilizer link and the pulley. It locks up solid against it. (Obviously not right). After looking at the diagram in the manual I see that there should be a washer-like disk between the pump and pulley. It's labeled as a retaining cover. This is missing on this car. It's also sooo definitely not reproduced anywhere I've seen. Am I correct in assuming this is the reason for the clearance issues? And if so, Does anyone have a spare one? Thanks, David |

Hello David. That washer is difficult to find. I've had to start making them. They're only .040 thick so check that amount is all you need. Butch |

Well I'm not sure if that's all. That's the only thing I see that's missing so I would assume it has to be the problem. I'm also throwing around the idea to go ahead and get a new pump since the original wasn't rebuilt by the last guy. But I don't know that that would solve the problem. I don't know if the new ones need that washer at all. Or if I would have to do the special seating procedures for the seal on a new one. The more insight on this subject the better. Thanks, David |

David, I have never encountered a problem with the pulley interfering with the stabilizer..and I never had to use a "washer-like disk". That might be for an original pump,, Are you sure that it is the correct pulley and correct stabilizer? Also, evey pump that I have delt with requires the run in or seating precedure,, I think it was to run dry for 1 minute? SPW |

They're all the original parts. That piece missing must be the issue. New pump is on the way. I understand the seating procedure now as well. Thanks, David |

Problem resolved. No more clearance issues. Painted, seated, installed. Thanks, David |
