MG TD TF 1500 - TD Windscreen Mounted Mirrors

The following pic is from John Quilter which I found in the archive. Reason for posting it is that his car also appears to have the pair of threaded holes in the driver's windscreen support, just like mine. (I also like the colour). I investigated these two holes on my car & discovered that they are 1/4" BSF. Got hold of a pair of 1/4" UNF chromed, slot head, raised countersunk bolts, as the BSF version is unobtainium, ran a 1/4" BSF die to extend the thread all the way to the head & then lopped them to about 1/2" in length. Using slot heads as they were the go on TC's & early TD's. In another archived thread I saw a pic of Declan's car showing a bracket with a ball mount. See Pic 2. I also had one of these which I fitted to the windscreen bracket using the existing pair of holes & my modified bolts, which I could or should probably now more correctly refer to as machine screws.

In one of my boxes marked really good stuff I knew I had a new rectangular mirror, much like the original on the scuttle, which I'd purchased 46 years ago. This has a sliding adjustable rod with a plastic ball on the end. I now find I need some kind of chromed bracket to connect these two balls together. Worth mentioning at this point that they are two different diameters. This brings me back to Declan's pic which seems to show the sort of ball connecting bracket that I need.

A Google search produced nothing. Any suggestions? Please don't tell me to use the approaches suggested in the archive. I want to persevere with the lower mounting position. I've seen other cars here with the same pair of holes, which suggests to me they MAY have come from the factory like that. I mean who else in their right mind but the Brits would bother to tap BSF holes? Cheers

This is another local car with the two BSF holes & the chromed bracket. What I can see of the mirror seems to resemble the one I'm trying to fit. Cheers

Peter
Look at Holden Vintage and Classic (UK)>> Hardware>> Mirrors>> Vintage Mirror. The link is too long to include. Order on line.

I was a happy customer until my last order which hasn't arrived 1 month after order lodged and being sent.

Peter, I got mine for my TF from Moss from the catalogue, however it's not shown on the TD or TF pages only the TC page.

Peter,
I bought that mirror from SVC. Maybe they would sell you the ball joint separately. They are usually at the MG Autojumble in Houten in Holland at the beginning of January. I hope to be there, weather and health permitting and could pick one up and post it to you.
Might be worth asking them as they are nice people and a pleasure to deal with.

Could you cobble something together along these lines?

I really like these mirrors, very stable and easy to adjust. Windscreen can be lowered and the mirrors can still be used. PJ

PJ, I though about making a special bracket for this purpose.

Did you buy it or made it yourself ?

Laurent.

Why oh why do owners spend good money on beautifully chromium plated mirrors and then use flat head countersunk screws to fix them to the windscreen stanchions. They should be raised head countersunk. They are easily available from Spalding Fasteners, both cross head and slotted and look so much better. I bought 100 brass, raised, countersunk, slotted wood screws from them for the door furniture in my house and they look so much better than flat headed ones.

Yeah Jan I thought that when I took the pic ages ago. The reason may have been that trying to find chromed raised head countersunk slots in BSF was impossible. I had no luck which is why I had to modify the TC replacement bracket mounting screws with the UNF thread by running the BSF die over them & cutting them to length. The other option was to use Recoils, the local version of the Helicoil, but the kit costs about $65 delivered. My mods cost nothing.

Saw your work in the archive PJ but as I said I'm keen to use the existing holes. I also like the mirror that I have as it matches the shape of the original interior mirror. No reply yet from SVC Declan. Oddly enough I do have the stand you refer to in your other link. See pic. Cheers

Laurent, The mirrors come with the brackets from Moss, but saying that, I made another set of brackets out of stainless that moves the mirrors 1 inch further forward so the side curtains, if mounted, won't hit the them. PJ
PJ Jennings

OK, I can see the hand made brackets on yout pic but it seemes that they rotate with the widscreen as you lower it. And then you also have to rotate the side mirrors the other way ?

Laurent.
