MG TD TF 1500 - TD wiper motor placement
The last few days I've been working on installing a new windshield gasket and polishing the glass and chrome parts of the assembly. The wiper motor is rebuilt and I'm trying to fit it to the top rail of the windshield. I can't for the life of me get the bakalite end to mount flush to the window. Yes, I know that the piece has a different thickness to the shaft centerline if you turn it 180 degrees. It doesn't matter. There is also no gasket in the holes to foul them either. I have a second wiper motor and the same issue. Anyone else encounter this? What gives? |

Is there a secondary spacer beyond the Bakalite piece that supports the wiper motor shaft? I must be missing something. Also which way does it mount? Is it mounted with the "Lucas" letters on the switch side mounted upside down so that the motor housing does not extend above the windshield frame? I really hate when the car is apart and you haven't a clue how it was supposed to look. |

Second spacer should not be necessary. The motor face should be about even with the rear lip on the windscreen frame. It mounts with "Lucas" upside down. |

Thanks Lew I have two wiper motors with this car and I found the extra spacer in a bag of parts. I can make fit with the added spacer but the motor will not come close to seating without it with both studs installed. I've tried it with both shaft supports. I pulled the studs and rolled them on a flat surface and they are both true. As much as I'd like to get it tucked up against the glass I'm afraid the spacer must be used or modify the shaft support bakalite piece or dress the holes in the upper windscreen frame. |

The tubular nuts that hold the spacer to the body of the wiper and which are on the mounting studs aren't standing proud of the spacer, are they? If they are, that would prevent the wiper from seating properly. Also, the spacer should be approximately 1/2" thick and the nuts should be well seated into the spacer. A photo might help. |

Lew the wiper motor alone with the shaft support bakalite piece only will not allow it to clear the hole on the front of the upper windscreen frame without doing surgery to the hole with a die grinder. Yes the hollow nuts are seated into the bakalite piece. The motor will sit correctly if I use the additional 1/2" spacer block. But, it doesn't look right with the motor sticking out the 1/2" from the inside of the frame. IDK I guess I need to look closely at some pics. The moss catalog doesn't even show the sundries on the motor page or on the windshield page either |
