MG TD TF 1500 - TD15001

TD15001 was restored in the late 60's by my dad, Matt McCombe. The 52 TD was his daily driver until 1979 when he was diagnosed with cancer. Dad died in 1980 at the age of 46. The old beauty was parked in my mom's garage for 32-years when I brought it home three years ago. It is my time to make the beast roar once again.

The restoration officially started today when I forked over $400 for my newly straightened chassis. My goal is to have this project completed in two years. The spending spree has begun in earnest.

I have already learned a ton over the past few weeks reading the threads here. I look forward to your advice and encouragement as I make my way towards completion of the TD.

Unfortunately, I did not take any pics before I started the teardown, so the attached is the best I could do. I will find some pics from back in the day and post them soon.

I've restored a bunch of cars over the years including an E-Type Jag in HS ('73). My latest was a 1900 hour hot rod build, finished in 16 months.

The secrets to success are.....

Don't start unless you can finish in both time and money.

Don't ever let a day go by when you don't do something, even if it's just 15 minutes while spaghetti's boiling on the stove. EVERY day.

Don't park a lawn mower anywhere near it, lean lawn chairs against it or put a cover on it. Once you do any of those, it's over.

Clean up after every work session. There's nothing more defeating than a pig-stye work place.

Know your limits and bite the bullet when you need to have work done for you.

Good luck.

Hi Kevin,

You came to the right place. Search the archives and ask questions. A great bunch of people here on this site.

Just to add what was stated above which by the way is very good advice.

Take lots of pictures. Have a photo diary of everything you take apart to reference when you start the rebuild.

Join a local MG club and attend as many MG shows as you can. It's nice to see new restorations as well as run into a real survivor car so you can study so your restoration is done correctly. You are rebuilding a T series as well as building relationships with people who've went through the same process you are starting right now. You will make a lot of new friends.

Visit this site often. I log in everyday.

Plan on shopping on Ebay for finding parts. Do a search and have email alerts sent to your inbox so you can view what's out there.

Go here and soak it all in. Chris has done a fantastic job compiling all this information.

Best of luck to you and keep us updated on your progress.

Thank you guys for the warm welcome and sound advice. I am finding that the collective wisdom and information sharing here is quite staggering. I really look forward to participating in the forum.

Fortunately, I have a very sound car with zero rust, a straight body, and a tub that is in relatively good shape considering I only have to replace about half of the timbers.

I am diving headlong into this project and am quite certain I will have lots of questions along the way.
