Good job Chris!
I guess the Andrex were added early in the cars life?
Nice to see the Woodhouse badge still there.

Matthew.

Thanks Chris. Even though it has a German history I guess this isn't a German made car? It does seem to be an Abingdon produced vehicle is it not? Cheers

I don't think there is any doubt that this is an Abingdon car built to NA spec for delivery to a US serviceman in Germany. What happened to it from 53 to 65 I have no idea, but in 1965 it is registered in Tulsa OK. I have the history from that point on.

Chris, thanks for posting the photos on the site.
S Griffin

Woodhouse cars were sold to two different markets. Ones that stayed in Europe and those that were always intended to be used in NA but first shipped to Germany. These were most often purchased by US servicemen who used them while on assignment. You can read more about these cars here:

Matthew: Since the A suspension members have to have the Andrex shock brackets welded on I expect these either came from the factory that way as part of an order, or were added early on. This is the only TD I have seen with Andrex shocks that is not a Mk II. According to Simon they are not on the back.
Christopher Couper

Wonder if the Andrex brackets are on the rear of the chassis too.
In other words: maybe Abingdon used up a few Mk II chassis at the end of TD production (like they did with twin cam chassis in MGA production which came on the market as "deLuxe" cars)
Just my 2cts....

Does anyone have a photo of the Andrex shocks on the rear? Or failing that the brackets that Nick is referring to? I don't yet know enough about this to go looking and know what I am seeing.
S Griffin

I have been out to the very cold garage and crawled around the back of the car and there are dampers forward of the rear axle. I found a reference photo on-line and it looks as if the Andrex dampers would have be aft of the axle. There is no evidence of them. Not sure about brackets at this point. Will get the car up on stands at the weekend if the promised warm up comes.
S Griffin

There should be a vertical bracket under the rearmost body mounting point of the chassis, which is not on the standard TD.

Hope the link works...

Nick, thanks, the link worked. Actually this was the reference photo that I found when I determined that the dampers should be to the rear of the axle. I'll look for the bracket at the weekend.

It is not unusual for Andrex pieces to be added after sale as everything could be purchased over the counter. I have seen several non MK II cars that have had only the front Andrexs in place though I don't know the individual cars histories. I think the "tell" would be in how the upper link bracket is held in place. The factory seems to have used a heavy spot welder to mount them. I would expect a shop or PO to have either drilled and bolted them into place or welded them either by oxy-acetylene or arc. Perhaps a PO competed in club events or enjoyed driving their TD to its spirited limits. I don't know if Andrexs shocks could be special ordered from the factory on non MK II cars but don't know why they couldn't be. I certainly don't have enough knowledge about the factory's inner workings to definitively say one way or the other.
