MG TD TF 1500 - 'TD3' Engine Tag Needed

Later Mark II cars had engines identified as "TD3" engines on the engine's ID tag, and I wonder if anyone has a TD3 tag they would care to sell? I have a customer who literally cannot register his car because he is missing that all-important button.

If anyone has a spare button, or a junk TD3 engine, I would very much appreciate hearing, as it would get a TD back on the road.

Many thanks.

Why not make your own? NTG and Abingdon no longer list the ID plates, but Moss does. 408-770 and 408-850.

Not sure for how much longer this part will be available.

The repop plates are not much like the originals, but I have suggested he modify a TD plate. I hope the state inspectors will not know the difference between later-stamped and original plates. They DO insist he have a TD3 plate.

To elucidate, original buttons read either TYPE XPAG, TYPE XPAG TD, TYPE XPAG TD2 or TYPE XPAG TD3, with interpuncts.

The repops available seem all to be the first type for TCs, but read "TYPE X.P.A.G." I have suggested he get a TYPE XPAG TD button and stamp a "3" on it, as they did with early TD2 engine plates, in hopes of convincing his inspector.

Tom, I guess this is in a state where engine numbers were used in lieu of today’s VIN.

It was that way in Australia in the 60s. I remember a police officer in s khaki dust cost taking a rubbing of my engine number of my Rover 75 that I had taken to my new posting in the military in 1968.

I had bought the car for $75 in 67, then was sent to California for 10 months. Left the car in the care of a young lass, a year later she delivered it to me, drove it for another year.

There was a large motor spares industry in stolen engines so rubbings were used to look for stolen engines.

Ah, the days of Midnight Spares, you could buy an exhaust that was still warm to the touch.

Peter - yes, exactly. He needs the engine number to be visible since it is what is on the title, but since his engine repair goes right though the raised plinth, the octagonal engine number plate was removed (but saved) and the button with "TD3" is long gone.
