MG TD TF 1500 - TDTF clutch lever Spring

B & G part numberAAA1601 return Spring clutch lever
Can anyone advise why this Spring has the usual hook at one end and a straight section with a right angle bend at the other.

Thanks
George

George, I don't know why B&G are showing that spring, only ones I've seen has a hook on each end. Clutch return spring on my car before restoration in photo which still uses the same type spring with a hook on each end. Yours of course on the other side. PJ

George -

I believe that I bought the clutch return spring for my TF from Moss. It has a rounded hook at one end and a right-angle bend at the other.

The rounded hook attaches to a small bracket with a hole bolted to the sump. The end with the right-angle bend goes through a hole in the lever between the clutch link and the clutch rod. Bend the straight end of the right-angle to lock it in place. Leave some wiggle room in the bend so that it doesn't bind. See photo below.

A slight aside ...
The fork of my lever is worn or spread apart a little. This allowed the barrel pin to slip out of one side of the lever. The barrel pin couldn't pull all the way out because it was held by the clutch rod. I bought two roll pins and inserted the larger into the smaller to produce a bushing with 1/4" ID and 1/2" OD. The clutch rod goes through the 1/4" ID pin and the 1/2" OD pin rides against the sides of the fork of the lever and against the barrel pin. This keeps the clutch rod centered in the barrel pin and the prevents the end of the barrel pin from slipping out of the fork. You can see in the photo below.

The photo shows the spring when I got the car, I replaced the spring with the hook facing in towards the sump, but the new spring still has a hook on both ends. Don't remember what supplier I got it from. PJ
