MG TD TF 1500 - Tecalemit & Purolator Oil Filters
My 55 1500 has a Tecalemit oil filter, but most TFs I've seen have a Purolator filter. Anyone know the reason for this? Not like something they they ran out of and would go to the local supplier to fill an order. My engine is original to the car, so this is a curiosity that has bugged me for some time. I believe Matthews car has a Purolator, not sure. PJ ![]() |

That is something that I would like to know the answer to too. At our recent gathering of 26 TF's there were maybe 3/4 Purolator and 1/4 Tecalemite. Mine is Purolator. Matthew. |

I think that this is yet another example of the factory using whatever part was available in order to continue scheduled production of our cars. |

"I think that this is yet another example of the factory using whatever part was available in order to continue scheduled production of our cars." Agree - sounds like someone came across a stash of Tecalemit oil filters behind the spray booth or some other such thing. Cheers - Dave |

Could it be that earlier TF's had Tecalemit filters? Mine was made in Dec.'53 and had the Tecalemit. |

JK Barter - what number is your car? My TF #1414 was completed Nov 30 Dec 1 per the Heritage Certificate. I do recall that your car has the DM7 stencil on the brake back plates just like on mine. My car has a Purolator oil canister though. Here is proof where Jim's comment is spot on where the factory did what they could with parts available to keep the assembly line moving. Off topic but a follow up question for JK. JK - what type of fastener on your car is used to attach the top of the fuel tank support straps that go through the rear of the tub? My car has hex bolts painted to match the red interior. I have seen two other original cars too with hex. Most are phillips style. Frank |

I guess that isn't something that would be in the Abington documents, what is left of them. Sounds like a very logical answer to use what was at hand and fit wise, the cans were identical in size. Plus, they probably were using up everything they could knowing the end was near for the T series, including engine changes. I'll except that, have no other choice! PJ |

They were also used in the Wolseley's and other cars. They were fitted at Morris Engines plant, I don't think that Abingdon had anything to do with it. The MG's were small beer in the scheme of production at BMC. Matthew. ![]() |

Matthew, The ad you displayed intrigues me. (1) What is a self adjusting tie rod? (2) What is a Manumatic transmission? Nice display though, interesting. PJ |

Before buying my '52 Plymouth, paid $152 in 1960 (first car - like first girlfriend - a never fading memory) I looked at a 50 Dodge that had what was referred to as a "Slush-O-Matic" transmission. You could shif without need if depressing the clutch pedal. I didn't buy the Dodge but wonder if that tranny was the same as a manumatic. Jud |

Jud, When I was a kid, back in the dark ages, My Uncle had a Hudson Terriplane,(spelling)? It had a transmission where you could pull out the shift lever from the floor, flip a cap to cover the hole and activate a switch on the steering column where you could shift with a small lever on a device that looked like an old style turn signal. It had the H pattern on it and you could shift it electrically. Volkswagen had a Super Bug in the 70s that the gearshift worked the clutch also, I had one of those, kinda nice, but they only had a 3 speed. Oh yeah, I think the Hudson also had a clutch with cork inserts that ran in oil. Times have changed. PJ |

Jud, that was called 'Fluid Drive'. It was available in a number of Chrysler vehicles through the 40's and into the 50's. Bud |

Frank, Mine is TF-1714 Relative to the gas tank strap bolts- mine are also hex nuts painted interior color. JB |

If you look at the Survivor TF it has a Purolator filter on it but why would anyone, after 50 plus years, assume they have the original filter on their car? Grin...not trolling, just curious. |
Gene Gillam |
Gene, I guess you cannot know for sure unless you have had the car since new - I am not sure, but assume the filter canister on mine was original since it was there when I bought the car 37 years ago and it had been neglected for many years before that, had not been restored and only has 63,000 miles on it- why would someone change it? But there is a chance that they did ,I suppose, since I actually have changed it myself to a spin-on filter! JB |
J K Barter |
I was wondering who was still using a 60+ year old filter. Seems to me it would be full of crud.LOL. Maybe Gene and I think alike. PS GENE, I will visit in March, gonna make sure of it.. will call tom |
Tom Maine |
Good deal Tom...looking forward to it (again!). |
Gene Gillam |
Didn't the Renoult (sp?) 4CV? (not sure of the model but about 1961ish also have an electric clutch activated by nudging the gear shift lever? Jud |
J K Chapin |
JB - thanks for looking and replying regarding the hex bolts. Both of our cars having been built so close, we have a lot of things similar. If you can contact me offline, it would be greatly appreciated. dirtydish AT comcast DOT net Thanks Frank |

The early TD's had a throw away canister by FRAM. The later TD's and TF's have the replaceable element from Tecalemit and Purolator. The outside housing never changes and the filter element is whats replaced. So you could never tell the filter itself was original or not on the these cars. |
Chris Couper |
Paul, the Manumatic transmission was a half way house between manual and fully automatic transmission. Good in theory but expensive and complicated and requiring a lot of skilled attention to keep working. Around 550 of these were fitted to the post-war MG Magnettes as well as to Wolseley's. The Self Adjusting tie rod? No idea! I want a self tuning engine that does not involve 'my' self. LOL. Matthew. |
M Magilton |
Thanks Matthew, the Manumatic transmission was a new one to me, never heard of it! Only 550 installed, now I know why. Grin. PJ |
