MG TD TF 1500 - TF 1500 Auction - Buyer Beware - Oh Brother

An Ebay Auction for a TF1500 - with a 1250 engine...

Quote:

"This car comes with the earlier TF1250 engine. Indicated by chassis number, this is a TF1500 car. Interesting note: many of the TF1500 cars left the factory with TF1250 engines even after the model had been redesignated."

Car has 14 bids..... what a misrepresentation....

Oh well.. hope somebody doesn't fall for it.

The car tag does say "See Engine" for the engine ID number. Whats to worry?
Chris Couper

Remove the 1500 badges and it's quite a nice car?
Willem van der Veer

At least its a TF engine.
I would not remove the badges as they are original to the car.
Too bad the original I.D. plate has gone.

Seems to me that there are a couple of potential issues here. The first is that the Guarantee plate is a modern re-stamped reproduction, so anything you wanted to stamp here - including VIN (and therefore color) and engine number - is fair game.

The seller writes, "... many of the TF1500 cars left the factory with TF1250 engines even after the model had been redesignated." I think what he means is that MG continued to make some 199 TF1250 cars after they had started making TF1500 cars - they were clearly using up the last remaining 1250 engines. But his claim supposes that there is a distinct "TF1500" car, with some characteristics that set it aside from the "TF1250" car. Since the only differences are the bonnet badging, the VIN plate and the engine, this seems a stretch.

But for me the ultimate question is whether this is XPEG TF8081 with a reproduction VIN plate and an XPAG engine from TF0591, or whether this is TF0591 with the correct engine, but with TF1500 badging and a phony VIN plate.

Perhaps he will let us know what the stamped frame number is, and resolve the issue. To me, a TF1500 with a replaced 1250 engine is worth LESS than a TF1250 with the correct engine.

Good point Tom, we don't know what this is without the chassis stamp.

No rear reflectors and no holes. Why wouldn't you put the reflectors back rather than fill holes?

Well, at least the tag on the engine didn't say "see vin plate"!
Should just have another vin plate made that says "clueless".

David Sheward

Couldn't even get the correct replacement plate. His has a warranty instead of the correct guarantee. I tried to look up the production info but the site is down.

The see engine stamping is something found on the later produced A's

MG LaVerne

This guy bought the E Type at a local auction I was looking at last spring. They kick out some outstanding cars but.... look at the listing for the MGB ....light rust???? The sills and the fenders are toast. In fairness to him, he has an accent that may lead me to believe came here from the UK...so it might be light rust by his standards. I'm guessing this is either a consignment or a quick flip. Still no excuse in not providing a better detailed description. It looks to have been painted fully assembled. I would have expected better from his shop.
MG LaVerne

LaVerne - whichever car it is:

HDA46 TF0591, 5/10/53, engine XPAG/TF30381

HDP46 TF8081, 17/11/54, engine XPEG/1943

Very rare ...only car built in the 17th month of 1954!
(Maybe they could include that info in the listing?)
LOL

Hi David,
Us Brits still think Day-Month-Year makes the best sense. We would say "8th of March" rather than "March 8th".

Ray Lee

My bad ...tiny phone screen, I read that as "17/17/54".
David Sheward

Hi Ray,

Given your age away there - makes me feel younger - thanks !

I agree that when writing dates in numbers the UK sequence is more logical, but when writing or especially speaking, we will surely say it either way round? - certainly I do.

Cheers,

John

Irrespective of all that has been said, there is still only one irrefutable way of determining the legitimacy of an XPEG block, and that us with the block clearly marked with cast-in ID - the part number AEF117, and the Wolsley 'W' mark in the diamond.

It appears that the "TF-1500" badges are in the wrong place? Shouldn't they be in front of the front hood button?
Jack Long

Behind the button is correct.

Gordon, great photo! Thankyou.
