MG TD TF 1500 - TF 1500 Distributor
G/day all, Recently I picked up a D2A distributor in very good condition, the actual model number was not the same as a TF type and it had a drive dog on the end rather than the gear type. I pulled it down for cleaning and discovered that the number on the weights was the same as TD TF Lucas 418321 and I got excited but as far as the cam and the auto advance springs are concerned there are no numbers or ID marks on them so I have come to a stop as far as rebuilding this dizzy thus giving me a spare. So would anyone have any of these bits, cam and springs that definitely suit a TF 1500 that they would like to part with. I should say that a lot of different cars use the same weights but I doubt if the sprigs would be the same. Thanks George |

George, The weights and the cam are identical for all D2A units. Threre are 2 main differences on each model 1/ As you mentioned the advance springs. 2/ The shaft and plate assembly. For the springs, it is meaningless to use the factory originals because they had been designed for 1950s fuel, factory camshaft and factory compression ratio. The plate on the shaft plate assembly has 2 holes which dictate the maximum advance. there should be a number stamped on the plate giving you the value. If you send me the 40XXXX number stamped on the distributor body I can tell you which plate you have. The drive dog is available new. John 52 TD |

I bought a used spiral gear from Sportsparts recently for $20. Roll pins are readily available. I got 16 for $3. Remove the dog & extract the shaft, then you can read the number stamped on the underside of the plate. This is more accurate than relying on the dizzy model number as I've found some have been rebuilt over the past 60 years using scavenged parts. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
