MG TD TF 1500 - TF 1500 radiator installation
When mounting a re-cored radiator in my TF 1500 the top flange of the radiator mates with and bolts to a corresponding flange on the valance. At the time I took the radiator out the valance flange was on top of the radiator flange and that made removal of the radiator very difficult. That arrangement may not have been original, and I am considering having the radiator flange on top when I reinstall it. I would be interested to know what the original arrangement was. |

JD Here is an image of the original arrangement-if this is the flange you are referring to. ![]() |

JK, Not to hijack JDs thread, but what sort of spacer is it that appears to be between the flanges for regulating the proper fit? PJ |

Paul, I am not sure, the image is not of my car, which was apart when I got it- I thought I would stack washers unless someone with an original car can suggest a better plan. JB |

Well, that's what I was thinking of doing, but was wondering if there were special spacers for them. PJ |

Pictures on the "Original MG TF" site show the side panel lug to be above the bracket on the radiator. Jan T |

Stacked washers is the usual solution. I have not come across any spacers. Matthew. |

John Meredith, Victoria, Australia Thanks to all for your responses, especially J K Barter for the photo which clearly shows the valance flange on top of the radiator flange. Under "To remove the radiator" in the Workshop Manual,it states that the shell and radiator block will (simply?)come away together after the various bolts are removed. My experience was that the arrangement shown in the photo made that operation extremely difficult. Never mind - I won't be doing it again. On a related matter, each of the two studs at the bottom of the radiator had just one circular doughnut shaped rubber washer - these are perished and can't be reused. Today I purchased Moss part number 281-648 (mounting set, radiator) which consists (for each of the studs)of two rubber doughnuts with matching steel rings . I imagine that there should be a rubber doughnut top and bottom of the cross member under the radiator where I have previously had only one, but I can't work out what the steel rings are for. Any suggestions? |

IMHO, the steel rings go around the outside of the washers,,,,they keep it from flatening out... SPW |

John, It's a pain, but when installing the radiator, you have to put everything together loose, with the metal rings in place. The rings go on the outside of the rubber donuts to preserve their shape during compressing. The rings might not stay in place until you get some pressure on them. As I said, their a pain, but doable. PJ |

Can I develop this thread please. Does the lacing that fits into the large holes in the radiator shell go all the way round i.e. does it go behind the side panels or just under the opening bonnet flaps. I also think there is a short length of body coloured piping between the shell and side panels. Am I correct. Also there is a bolt that goes through the bottom, front corner of the wing, through the side panel, through the shell and screws into the triangular radiator support. I assume there is a captive nut on the side panel, similar to the one that is half way up. There aren't any on mine and I have had them powder coated! Cheers Jan T |

The rubber lacing goes right to the bottom. I think the nut is captive?? I can see the bolts threaded end behind the slats. I have attached a pic showing the factory piping for the side panel. It is a slightly smaller diameter than the wing piping. Matthew. ![]() |
