MG TD TF 1500 - TF Brake Adjuster Mask Shimming

Does anybody know who will do the shimming as described by John Twist.

I have sourced 6 extra masks and need to have the shimmed, would rather use somebody wgo has done it before than try to explain to a local shop.

Thanks.

Peter,
having a shim welded is good, but I used a penny on each one. The penneys did not move in thousands of miles.
The rubber band shown in the pic was only to hold everything together during shoe replacement.

I saw the penny trick, thanks.

Just worried if inspector pulls a drum, should not though.

I have also used the penny trick with my TF and have several thousand miles since with no problems. I filed off both sides of the penny just a bit to make it fit better. I seriously doubt that any inspector would ever discover the mod. Once the springs and drum are back in place, I do not think that the penny will move. There is always a first time though.

Good luck and happy driving

If you are concerned about the shims being displaced clean surfaces and apply a drop of Loctite Super Glue. Dont use the cheap stuff it has not got the same bonding strength nor high temperature compatibility.

Any shop can weld. Have them watch the YouTube from John Twist. They will understand.
I did my front brakes and have been very happy and stopping much better.

I asked John Twist for some details about his mask- shimming video. Here is his response ...

"We purchased shimstock from NAPA, BK 6651913 which is 1/8” thick. We cut rectangles: 1/2 x 1 1/8. Weld the ends (the 1/2”) as welding the sides interferes with the fitting. We used our MIG welder. Then sand to fit if they’re too thick (they won’t be)."

Thanks, I have read all the archives, and have communicated with John Twist, I was just wondering if anybody was doing it.

I have got the used masks on the way, may try the Loctite under the penny, but will try without it first.

Probably do the rears first and see if that makes them better, they are OK, but have used most of the adjuster range.

Thanks again folks.
