MG TD TF 1500 - TF Chassis & Fender Bolts?
Are chassis and fender bolts on the TFs BSF? PJ |

PJ Most are 5/16 BSF with a few 3/8 BSF used for the fender tiebar brackets. Tom '54 TF |

That for the front fenders. I thought I saw "front" in your post. My rear fenders were aytpical bacause my car no longer has captive nuts in the rear. Not sure what came from the factory, but I used 5/16 BSF in the rear too. Tom |

Tom, Rear Guard setscrews on a TF were originally 1/4" BSF. The manufacturer of these was 'Rubery Owen' on this part of the car. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Thanks for confirming they are BSF. I have the original tie bar bolts, but that's about all. Been so long since I tore this thing apart, I didn't remember the rear fender bolts were 1/4 inch. Thanks Rob for that info. PJ |

Paul, For another bit of TF trivia, the four(4)setscrews which affix the bottom run of the side engine panel to the chassis frame were, from my experience, originally 5/16" BSF,'Sparts' manufacturer. The washers here are smaller diameter(1") I think compared to the larger diameter washers for the rear guards. And so it goes on...................! Thanks Rob, I'm sure getting an education on these cars. Incidentally, I save every bit of info you guys give me for a later date. Can't thank you guys enough for all your kindness and your relentless efforts to help. PJ. |

My cowl carriage bolts have R504 in raised letters on the outer head surface and appear to be 1/4 inch bolts, is this correct? What threads are they supposed to have? Seems like the nuts are standard threads. PJ |

I meant to post this here, instead of the other thread. They are British Standard Fine (BSF) as are all the chassis bolts and screws larger than 3/16 dia. Most are 5/16 BSF, some 1/4 and a few 3/8 Smaller screws are BA, with 2BA being the most common. Carbs are all BA, ( 2BA and 4BA). There is one "Whitworth" bolt (BSW) on the generator adjust bracket. The engine and transmission are French Standard Metric (NOT ISO Metric), with Whitworth heads: 5 x 0.75 mm, 6 x 1.0 mm, 8 x 1.0 mm, 10 x 1.5 mm and 12 x 1.5 mm. reflecting their being built in the Hotchkiss Machine Gun Factory. Late TDs and TFs rear axles have Unified Threads instead of BSF, these are the same as ANF ( American National Fine or SAE threads) No matter what you may find on your T car, originally it was BSF, BA or FSM with Whitworth heads |
