MG TD TF 1500 - TF cowl rubber strip

Here's what Moss sends you for the TF cowl rubber strip, which I understand is not quite correct. It can be corrected by slicing some of it off, but where is the slice made (what gets cut off)? Or am I better off leaving it alone? thanks,
Tyler

That looks perfect to me. It looks like you have the new and improved version. Kudos to Moss.

Oops, the photo is the correct rubber. I have the Moss rubber, which has a "hooked" lip that, I understand, can be trimmed off to be more correct. What is the part to be trimmed off? thanks, Tyler

The rubber in your hand with the 90 degree angle can be had from Brown & Gammon's. The Moss rubber with the V cut, to make it a 90 degree angle will have a shorter lip and unless you are extremely careful cutting it and lucky, it won't be perfect! As a test, I tried cutting off the V lip on an old rubber and decided to bite the bullet and order the correct one from the UK. PJ

I just got a piece from B&G and am really surprised by the difference in dimensions from the rubber I got from Abingdon Spares years ago ,but never used.

JKB, which is which? Bud

The one on the right is the B&G rubber.

The one from Brown and Gammons is not as thick as the one from A.S.- I threw away the original-so I don't know how thick it was.

I broke down and ordered a roll from B&G this morning, but amassed a larger bill after surfing the rest of their inventory.

Thanks, JB. That one on the left is the same, undesirable, one that Moss has been selling. Bud

Now that sounds familiar! Grin, PJ

What is the web page address for B&G?

Thanks!

Great artwork, perfectly explains the issue. George

I really wonder if either of these are absolutely correct or appropriate. I suspect the Moss one was created to overcome a deficiency of the original in terms of getting it to lay down properly. I think they over did it a bit though as its almost impossible to install with two men and a boy.

The thickness of the B&G may be affected by how much of a step you have in the cowl. You want the hood to be reasonably aligned to the cowl and not too much higher or lower, plus not interfere with the latching mechanism.

I am still waiting for a good end shot of an original one. A hard picture to get even if you can find an unrestored car to take it from. A tracing would be even better as we could take measurements etc. A sample would be nice too but I suspect the rubber probably has shrunk quite a lot in 60 year.

Chris,

When I get the cowl / bonnet rest rubber from B&G I will compare with what came off my car and take measurements and post my findings.
Frank Cronin

Hi Tyler

You owe me royalties - I recognised the powder coated firewall but not my hand - it is too clean. I can confirm the rubber is from Brown and Gannon's, purchased a couple of months ago

Cheers

Looking at this picture and others in the thread, the rounded crown section is not as "pronounced" as the B&G.

Oh well. Close enough for what is out there and no mods / cutting needs to be done compared to Moss.

I will still take measurements.
Frank Cronin

Thanks Frank. It appears that the original is different than both repos. Can you measure the bottom width for me? I can then use that measurement and the picture to guestimate the other dimensions.
