MG TD TF 1500 - TF Dash Board Brackets

I found a good TF on display in the Lakeland Car Museum and luckily for me it had a KL Heater fitted. I attach an underdash photo showing where it goes. However I assumed the lower part of the "ladder" bracket fitted to the lip on the tool box. My car has holes which line up. When I tried to fit the heater though the circular fan housing was too high and my heater is still on the bench. It looks in the photo as though the frame is attached to spacers or something else to lower it. Can anyone please advise.

Hi Jan,
I have a KL heater in my TF and it only just fits.
The arching of the support rails and the slope angle of the dash determine the fit. As the dash is angled more towards the vertical then the support arches down to give clearance but only just.
I would photograph it but it means removing the undertray and I am not agile enough at the moment.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the info. I've trial fitted the heater and there are two places where I see problems. The first is the position of the water pipes. If they are to the rear they hit the chassis hoop. Maybe they fit from one side? The other issue is the milometer zeroing cable. There is very little clearance for this to sweep away in any sort of curve. If I was to use a computer fan as you recommend this would help enormously since I could dispense with the original fan and fit the computer one inside the case. This would allow me to raise the position of the heater and fit the water pipes above the hoop. I am concerned about the air flow though. I picked up two computer fans at a local car boot sale for 50p and the blow from these is no where near that of the original fan. Is the flow from the computer one adequate? What about fitting two fans, one on top of the other, in the case. There is room.

Thanks for the anticipated reply.

Hi Jan,
as you say the airflow is not as good as the original.
Even so with a moderately sealed car the output keeps the cabin comfy,I even have a clip on plate to direct the flow sideways so my leg does not get too hot.
My fan is 120 mm.with the fan inside the case you will have to make a blanking plate to direct the airflow through the matrix. The big advantage is the low current consumption in winter with light and wipers on,my car gets used all year round.
My pipes are are the back, if I get a chance tomorrow I will photo and post.

In photo 4 you can see a crossbrace was removed, this was to accommodate another heater when this one leaked.

Photo 5 just shows a usefull cubbie inside the footramp(spare dizzy and coil) also how I have run the water supply from the engine to the heater. The bulkhead fittings are permanent.
By the way, no cracks about untidy wiring it is hidden and this car is a user not a show car ;-)

Thank you Ray that's exactly what I needed. I have now found the angles to which the frame are bent are critical. A degree or so too much and the heater catches the instruments. Looks as though there are only three TFs with a KL heater - yours, the one in the Newby Bridge Museum and mine. Even though mine now resides in Glasgow it was originally a Liverpool car. Newby Bridge isn't too far from Mersey side so maybe there are all from the same dealer.

Once again thank you

Hi Jan.
My TF reg TTD332 was registered in Lancashire and sold from Morecambe and sat in the showroom for 3 months before sale. The docs are hard to get at right now but when I can I will let you know the dealer.
The first owner was the Landlord of the "Drunken Duck Inn" in Ambleside in the Lake District.
Anybody with nothing to do, google the Inn.
I have had a few offers for the Reg number from TD owners, but as it was on the car from new I have said no.
