MG TD TF 1500 - TF Dash board buttons

Wondering are the buttons S C L P & A made from bakelite and how are they best restored to bring back the black and the shine. Currently not bad but they are dull and have a yellowish patchiness to them.
Thanks Darryl

Hi Darryl,

T Cut will restore them. If you can spin them in an electric drill against a rag with T Cut they will come up like new.

Cheers

Could you identify T Cut for us folks on the other side of the Atlantic? TIA. Bud

Hi Bud
T Cut is an abrasive liquid used to restore the colour in car paintwork. Removes oxidation and ingrained dirt.
Mind you I have being going at the choke button for 20 mins and only marginally improved. But that's by hand! I need to rig up Jan's device.

Just a comment....I recently bought a new set of TF knobs, as sold through Moss USA. Compared to my originals, I think the quality, feel and look is great. The holes for the locking button fit perfectly and all my knobs now look bright and fit tight.

But....I will keep the originals!

Hi Tom My new starter cable and choke cable from Moss both came with knobs and I agree they are very good quality. But they show the originals up hence the need for a clean and repaint of the letters....somehow.

I used my sisal buff & cutting compound on my handbrake handle, dizzy cap, ignition switch knobs & my starter & choke knobs & they shine like new yet still retain their patina. I prefer to restore rather than replace if I possibly can. Cheers

You can also get a white nail filler stick at the big box store to fill in the etched portion if needed.

I have also used black fabric spray and then a bit of satin clear to restore the knobs. Bakelight, when buffed, often looks brown.
Christopher Couper

I like them brown.

Tom I have just realised the knobs I got with my starter and choke cables from Moss Europe don't have knobs that come off. Unlike yours they look plastic and now I can't put on my original knobs. Stumped!

Tom Did the new knobs you bought include a choke and starter. My ones were sealed to the cable and I am now looking for cables with the old connectors that will take the old knobs.
Cheers Darryl

Hi Darryl
Yes, the set included the "C" and "S" buttons. I bought a new choke cable with knob a few years ago, and already had a new "S" button.
You want my spare new ones? The postage can't be much.

Thanks for the offer Tom but I have good C and S buttons but I thought I was getting cables from Moss that would allow me to put on my old buttons but instead the buttons are sealed on the cables and look quite different / new to my other original buttons. I am trying to source new cables with the old style tops that allow you to put on and take off the buttons.
Thanks again Darryl
