MG TD TF 1500 - TF day/night rear view mirror
Hello all, A good friend of mine has a pristine all original low mileage TF 1500. His day night mirror lost the silver on the back. Does anybody know where he could obtain a replacement prizim glass? I have traced it. ![]() |

I had one made at a local glass shop. Pretty cheap as I recall...like $5? (12+ years ago). I would offer up their name / contact info ....but went by there the other day and they were closed down, out of business. |

Day night mirror? Really? Tom |

Here is a picture of the mirror. The picture was taken by Frank and borrowed from Chris's site. The prizim glass has been removed and replaced with a conventional piece of mirror glass.

Tom, I have seen a few TFs with these mirrors. A number of TFs in Australia have them. I think the same mirror was available on Jaguars, but I am not sure of that. David |

Wow! Never seen one. Thanks for the information. Best, Tom |

It is quite easy to grind a larger mirror, from a big car, down to size. All you need is a glass grinder which all glass shops have or you can borrow one from an optometrist, they use them to grind lenses to fit frames. In the old days, anyway. I made one for my Jaguar from a Cadillac mirror years ago. I tried a big day/night mirror on my td but found the double image distracting when the top was down and I drove under street lights. I made it seem like a car was coming up behind me. The wide view from the big mirror was nice, however. Chuck |

Chuck - Can you flip the mirror over, such that is flips down? The day/night will operate equally well either way and having it down will not reflect street lights and/or stars. Cheers - Dave |

You might want to check the archives, but Bob Brown found the Jaguar mirror that matches up very nicely. Here's an image of the mirror on Lazarus (my TD). Next I'll show the side view. I haven't yet applied a chrome color to the back. Bud

Note that the original TF day/night Mirrors had a thin round mounting post and used A round grommet where it mounts, not the large Tear drop style base and grommet. My ' 55 TF 1500 came with the D/N mirror Rick Walsh |

why not just get the existing glass resilvered or do it yourself. http://www.resilvering.com/Resilvering.html I remember doing it in high school chem lab. Jim B |

Your friends best option might be to have the glass re-silvered. There is a Hemmings advertisement for auto mirror re-silvering. Ron's Corner, 27169 State Hwy 6,Winston, Mo 660 749 5473. Might be worth a call. John |

I had my original day-night mirror re-silvered locally about 15 years ago. Not expensive. The day-night mirrors appeared on most TF's about the same time as the 1500 was released. Matthew. |
