MG TD TF 1500 - TF door latches

Good afternoon, I was once told that there was a way to adjust the door latches on my TF. They do double latch, but there is a little bit of play once the passenger side has been double latched. Is there a way to adjust this?

You can add washers to the wedge side to make it move into the latch more, if that is your problem.

Remove the nut from the wedge shaft and extract it from the lock frame. Add some thin, chrome washers a few at a time and test the fit until the wedge fully fills the space in the latch and closes easily.

You probably need to shim the wedge bracket to move the door into the opening.
If there any shims under the door lock itself, remove them before trying the above.
It is time consuming but very satisfying to get it right.

FWIW....

I had a similar issue with my doors. I got the latches to fully seat in the wedges. However, I noted the old buffers (Moss P/N: 281-198) were pretty worn, cracked and thin. I replaced them with a new set. The new ones were thicker, so I needed to shave them a bit. After doing so, the doors now close tight and no discernable play to speak of.

TR,

For peace of mind I suggest you buy the door safety latches as shown on the link below.

You have good advice here. I made up a thicker wedge bracket behind (part 15 in image 1). I also found that the slot on the chrome cover of the lock mechanism on the door already had a slot in it that was originally (on some other BMC models) for a door safety lock. I made up one of these for the passenger door as my wife was worried that her knee might knock the release lever and the door fly open at speed.
