MG TD TF 1500 - TF Dummy Radiator Cap Studs

Trying to determine a good way to attach two new mounting studs to my TF dummy radiator cap. Don't want to damage the chrome. Not much stress on the studs.
> Thread the cap and screw in the stud. (Possibly crack it)
> Drill hole and epoxy the stud with JB Weld.

How are the studs attached to the cap? Are they threaded into the cap or soldered/braised?

One of the studs on my cap is broken off. The other is bent. A machinist club member can drill out the old studs.
3/16 BSF studs
3/4" exposed out of the cap
3/8" threaded plus bare shoulder
1/8 W hex nuts with high collar split washers
Cap appears to be chrome plated cast brass.

Thanks for your knowledge and suggestions.

Lonnie,

If this is to mount a radiator mascot, what I have done is to drill the cap to clear the screws or studs and tap the mascot. I then seal the holes with silicon and place a small cork pad under the mascot, so as to not scratch the cap.
If using studs, obviously tap the cap instead of drilling clearance holes.

Remove and replace the studs. Be very careful.

I'm not attaching anything to the dummy cap. I want to remove and replace the studs. Looking for info on how the original studs were attached to the cap. And for tips on how to remove and replace with new ones.

Looks like they were soldered into place. Notice where they enter the cap.

I'm sure that the club member and I can figure it out.

Sorry, Lonnie. I missed the fact that this was a TF. I'm so used to the TD and pre-war caps.

In the event that drilling and machining gets to be too much......there is a TF dummy cap with good studs on eBay now.

Thanks Tom,

The plan is to mill the broken stud flat, then drill. I feel that the safest way to secure the new stud is with JB Weld instead of tapping.

The chrome on my cap is better than the eBay cap. I know that they don’t come up very often.
