MG TD TF 1500 - TF Exterior Paint. Paintshop Chose.

Tomorrow the paperwork for the paint job will be made up. I chose a local shop that does a lot of custom paint jobs. I went and looked at three of his personal cars and they are flawless. Many coats to be applied, more than I thought. Primer, colored sealer, 3 coats of color urethane and a top clear coat. Not sure when he can start on it, but no big hurry. Things are looking up! PJ

Paul.

Can you give your thoughts on why you went with the 2 stage with clear coat? Great paint, but it is really shiny.

Bruce, Only way this guy will paint a car. He says if it has his name on it, it has to be perfect! The car is being put together as a driver, not a concourse show car. Too many issues to do that anyway. It will be painted Jag Regency Red, even though it's supposed to be painted MG Red by the C code. I'm not building it to sell, just for me. I already have a Flame Red 72 MGB show car and don't want another bright Red car. When I'm done with it, it will go to my son, who loves old cars and he loves the paint scheme I chose for the TF. I've had trailer queens before in antique American cars I've restored and just got bored with them. This one will get driven, that's all I can say. I know the purists will probably not like it, but you know how that goes. I do. PJ

Two pack plus clear coat is shiny straight from the gun but after machine polishing the shine changes to a very acceptable lustre. Also you can bend over the front wings whist wearing coarse overalls without scratching the paintwork.

My clear coat was certainly not "shiny straight from the gun". It has no shine at all, at least when I did mine. The shine comes when you "color sand" it down then you build up the shine with various compounds to your liking. It takes a LONG TIME to get it right, regardless of what you see on those TV shows! I only mention this because your guy must charge for this time. I would get it in writing!! Just my 2 cents worth. And have him save you some color for future touchups.

Ed, I have signed papers for the job. He can't get to it until September. PJ
