MG TD TF 1500 - TF Flashers

My turn signals/flashers work fine. However, the instrument panel flasher light is not. This just started. When I engage the flashers, left or right, the panel light has a very low illumination and is almost impossible to see. Since the flashers are working I assume that the relay is fine. I checked the flashers this morning and the issue remained. A few minutes ago I rechecked the flashers and the instrument panel light was working normally. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what I might look at before I throw my back out crawling around trying to find the problem (that may or may not be there!). Could there be a grounding issue with the panel warning light?

Have you checked the points in the turn signal/brake relay box?

Tom-- The relay looks fine. I checked it before I responded to you and in doing so I realized something that I forgot about. Years ago I installed a buzzer in the flasher wiring. I set the flasher switch such that it remains on for perhaps 4 minutes (I got tired of sitting at a light signal and constantly having to turn the switch on after it automatically turned off). The buzzer reminds me to turn the thing off. I would bet that this is where my problem is located.

Larry, if that buzzer isn’t your issue..you cannot tell you have an issue with the contacts in that relay box while you are hanging upside down peering up at it with the eyeball. Don’t ask me how I know this… That can have corrosion that raises the resistance in the circuit.. it can mimic a bad ground. I had to use a meter to figure it out..

Good luck..

Larry,
Just take the spring out of the flasher switch and it operates like a normal switch that you have to reset manually. No more traffic light timeouts! You could also connect just the coil from the cheapest noisiest 12V automotive relay you can find between terminal P on the flasher can and ground instead of the buzzer. It is a much more pleasant clicking sound like a modern rather than a screetching buzzer. Just attach the relay with double sided tape under the dash. I have done that on both my cars and am very pleased.

If the lights are flashing then the relay box points are fine. I would suspect the P connection on the flasher unit or ground on the panel light.
