MG TD TF 1500 - TF Front Bumper mounting detail
Does anyone have a good photo or two of the TF front bumper attached to the frame horns? Mine won't quite fit right. The angles are wrong and I might need shims. Also might scratch or crush the fender when tightened down. thanks, Tyler |

Tyler This may assist, my car is not original. I had to add a spacer under the fixing brackets so the bumper would clear the tyres when steering is on full lock. Graeme ![]() |

Tyler, there is supposed to be cylindrical Aluminum spacers behind the brackets to move the bumper further away from the fender. Same on the rear, but a different length. PJ |

Hi Tyler, I am not certain what your problem is but you mention crushing the bumper. There should be spacers between the bumper brackets and the bumper itself. These are domed on one side to match the bumper curvature and flat on the side that touches the bracket. They prevent you flattening the bumper blade as you tighten the domed bolts (and Overrider bolts). I recently made a set by pouring molten lead into a mould made from a tin can bent to the bumper profile. I wanted soft metal that wouldn't dig into the plating on the rear of the bumper. I have a friend who also made a set using the glass reinforced polyester putty and it worked very well. Cheers Jan |

I understand your question Tyler and I'll be interested in a response from ..maybe Matthew? My car had been crunched before I got it and the horns were badly wrinkeled along with being brazed back together and the radiator cross member buggered and brazed in place as well. I cut the horns off, fabricated some new ones and welded them on. So I didn't expect perfect but like you I wonder how it is supposed to be. For what ever it's worth I put a rubber grommet between the bumper spacer and the fender. Nothing on the back side. ![]() |

The car came with new bumper hardware, but the spacer (photo) is too wide (1.5 in)and overlaps the indentation in the fender. If I tighten it down, it will crush the indent in the fender. I need a 1-in or 1.2-in diameter spacer. I had a pair of smaller spacers, but used them on the rear bumper, which bolted up beautifully. Dang! Oh well, I think there's a football game on pretty soon. The smaller spacers go on the front of the car. Larger ones on the rear. |

Tyler Something I neglected to mention in this assembly process is to ensure your crank handle key hole is aligned correctly so it facilitates handle entry to the dog on your engine. Also the distance the bumper is displaced forward has to be compatible with the bend in the crank handle, there should be plenty of tolerance in this area to play with. Graeme |

I actually have 2 sizes of shorter spacers: About 3/4" and 1.25" lengths. Which one is right for the front spacers? thanks, Tyler |

Mine are half inch long and one inch diameter if that helps. You could use one of each if the bumper ends are out of alignment with the leading edge of the front guards. Matthew. |
