MG TD TF 1500 - TF Fuel Sending Unit

Moss shows a sending unit for a TD/TF, but is the one with the variable coil for a car with a gage. They don't list the one as original just for the light? Any clues? B&G doesn't seem to have it either. Mine works for a while, but tightens up after being in fuel for a while and hangs up. PJ

Paul,

That is the correct unit for the light system. At least that's what is in my 54 TF. Perhaps it was also used for a gage in other cars.

Paul,

I forgot to ask if you had the unit apart and cleaned it. My car sat for 25 years before I bought it and I had to clean about a solid 1/8" of gunk from the unit to get it moving freely and so far it's been fine for 2 years now. The lever needs to move without resistance.

There is bulk posts in the archive on this subject. If your original sender is recoverable stick with it the Asian rubbish that is about is exactly that and takes some mods to bring to bring them to an acceptable standard.

Highly recommend taking the Doug Pelton gasket route just be aware of other issues that are contained in my posts.

The sender Moss shows on page 9, item 116 part no.360-050, is for the fuel warning lamp and is correct for the T-cars .
It has the switch and not the coil resistor.

To my surprise the coat in not out of sight at $57.95

Thanks Don, I don't think the cost is that bad either, compared to other items.
I'm going to take Georges & Peters advice and see what is causing mine to hang up. Can these units be taken apart? I haven't done so, but I'd like to polish the shaft, if it can be removed. It might be sticky with old gas residue. A drop of lubricant on the shaft and it works great, but soon as gas hits it, it starts to hang up. PJ

Oh yes, carb cleaner doesn't seem to help much either.

I think Moss has the wrong "info" listed, that sender is for a car with a gauge, that won't work with our bulbs. There are internal mechanism pictures in Bud's T-talk of the original sender with the contacts, volumes somewhere in archives also. I have had great success with the Abingdon Spares gasket set for the senders, and have also read that the plastic floats on new production senders dissolve in the ethanol in our gas. George
George Butz

Thanks George, I thought the same thing when I saw the photo of the sender they were talking about. I'm going to see what is making mine hang up, as it's in perfect shape other than that.
Why would they put a float on the new ones that isn't ethanol resistant! I guess they don't have corn gas in China! PJ
Paul S Jennings

For what it's worth if you get to that point PJ, Doug at the Frame Up can provide you with a new sender with a brass float. You will have to ask specifically for it. Had him do one for Bill's TC which was more of a rebuild than I wanted to take on. I found that by working the sticky pin back and forth that it eventually freed up the binding corrosion without disassembly.

Holy Mackerel, looking at that photo tells me mine looks like new! That one is really corroded! Of course mine is slightly newer, Grin. PJ
