MG TD TF 1500 - TF Heat shield and the choke

Hi All:
My TF was boiling the front float bowl dry after a run in hot weather so I made a pair of heat shields out of 1/32 in. aluminium. Now the bracket that holds the choke cable to the carb hits the firewall to frame brace. Anybody else ever have this problem and what was your solution?

I have seen aluminum beverage can insulators used on the float bowls. Cheap, and it seams to work.

Quick temp fix's:
Dry ice in burlap around carbs.
(My dad's trick for parades in the TF)

"Snap" cold packs from drug store.
(My trick from years ago when mine did this , but normally only on hot days and low/stop n go driving.

Long term:
JetHot treatment of exhaust manifold.
My TF has had no vapor lock problem for 14 years since doing that.

I still carry a snap cold pack ...but not even sure if it is good any longer.

John: does it get hot enough in Alberta to make vapour locks?

We have never had this issue on our car here in MI,USA.

By the way, the seat cushion leather you sent me some years ago is still holding up well. Thanks.

I have a headder instead of the stock manifold and after switching to that (which is ceramic coated inside and out) I have not had an issue with the carb bowls boiling out. I suspect it is the coating more than anything that is helping.

John,
FWIW: Early on in my vapor lock battle years ago I purchased a heat shield from fee-bay. There may have been other forces at work, but in my case, it actually made it worse.

I have been recommending Jet-Hot for years. 14 years ago they were the only one I found that treated the "inside" of manifold ...now there are many doing the same.

To date I can not recall anyone that tried it and it didn't work for them. Of course correct timing can play a big part, but I am assuming you have looked into that already.

Having the inside treated expels hot gas quicker so it reduces the operating temperature. This also results in a slight increase in HP ...so kind of a win-win in my book. I believe you will find this cost aprx $150 these days.

if you are experiencing vapor lock after a run and a short park..a heat shield will do you no good as you are experiencing heat saturation under the hood. if it occurs while running (never heard of that, but i guess there is always a first time) then the shield may provide some relief. regards. tom
