MG TD TF 1500 - TF Jaeger Speedo

Help, I made a monumental mistake immersing my speedo mechanism in degreaser today.I watched in horror as all the decal numbers disappeared on the trip and mileage odometers.

Anyone know of a source where I can purchase these decals, I know they are available as a speedo repair shop has indicated they can repair my speedo however they will not sell me the decals alone.

Ebay has them listed for a 57 Chev however I dont know if the odometer wheels are the same diameter, someone in the knowledge tank may be able to advise.

Appreciate any advise.

Hi Graeme, some time ago I purchased some Jaeger odometer and trip decals off eBay from a person in Oz. I have his phone number so if you send me your email address I will pass it on. I spoke to him a year or two ago and at that time I think he has some more hanging about.

Many thanks Hugh, email sent.

Once you get squared away Graeme if he has any left I could certinly use these decals as well.

Moss sells Jaeger decals for the flat faced instruments. Good price too.

I should add: part number 215-100. Here's a pic

Geoffrey,

I think Graeme is talking about the white on black cilindrical indicator for the trip and mileage odometers.

The picture you show is for the TD and the TF is very different.

Graeme,

I know these dails are the same as the Y-type, so maybe that could be a source for original parts.
Maybe the parts are also used in later MG/BMC offerings?
Willem van der Veer

I was guessing that Graeme's was different. I thought it might help Peter TD 5801 though...

Graeme, That reminds me of the time I was cleaning/repairing a TF wiper motor, and sprayed carb cleaner on the armature. It cleaned it well, and immediately dissolved all of the insulating varnish. Stuff happens! George

Unfortunately no Geoff. Willem is correct. I have the decals for the face. I'm looking for the decal numbers on the trip and mileage odometers as mine are looking very tired. (The ones that disappeared on Graeme). Cheers

Well sometimes the sun can shine on you. In Ireland someone had placed a Y Type speedo on Ebay, my bid won it. When I get sorted out I should have some parts that will be available to either have a complete speedo rebuilt or to maybe assist another forum member.

Contact me if you are interested, everything including the clock, dial and bezels are A1. Odometer/trip meter roller decals are non existent and odometer drive gear is damaged.

G Evans

Graeme you have mail.
P Hehir

The TF speedo has different marking from the YB.

TF has large single batons, YB has twin batons.

The correct face can be supplied by Speedograph Richfield in the UK.
B T Jones

Thanks for confirming the dial differences, I was aware and intend to exchange the YB dial to my original TF dial.

One issue I am not certain about is whether the YB odometer/trip meter uses the same ratio drive gears, bit of a learning curve ahead.
G Evans

Graeme, the later TD speedometers have a number on their face that shows the turns of the input cable per mile. From this you can judge the gearing. The number on mine is 1600. Perhaps there are similar numbers on the instruments that you're considering. Bud

<<TF has large single batons, YB has twin batons>>.

Can somebody please explain what batons are?

Willem van der Veer

Thanks Willem for asking the question not asked. I'd been scratching my head about that since reading the post last evening.

Batons are the strokes next to the numerals around the circumference of the dial, see Buds image in a previous post.

Ah, thanks. You learn something everyday.
