MG TD TF 1500 - TF Radiator Cap
I am in immediate need of a radiator cap for my 1954 TF. If anyone has one I might buy, or knows of a source, please let me know. Appreciatively, Jerry |

Found mine at NAPA...I think it calls for a 4 lb.. but I'm running a 6 lb myself. It's good if you can take the old cap in as there are many neck configerations. |

LaVerne, Thanks for that solid tip! I'll scoot over to a NAPA store on Monday. Jerry |

Jerry, please post the NAPA part number if you find it. Bud |

Hi guys I have one right here. NAPA 703-1410 for the four pounder. Made in good old Mexico. Tom '54 TF |

Jerry, The 'neck' depth of the TF radiator's area where the cap is affixed is longer compared to some other vehicles using the 4lbs caps.If you buy a cap which is too short in length, the working spring pressure can then be non existent. Just an alert. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177(Athos"). |

I just compared the height profile to the old crusty cap I replaced. The NAPA cap was exactly the same in every dimension. Tom |

Whoops! Ah, these senior moments -- I'm not looking for a 4# TF cap. I'm looking for a 4# MGB cap. I've installed an MGB expansion tank in Lazarus and I want to find a 4# cap to fit it. The cap that I'm using now has a flip-up pressure release handle. When it gets pushed down it's a 7# cap. Way too much, but I want to try a 4#'er for summer parades. Bud

I think Stant only makes caps from 16 lbs and up now. I know the old Fords used a 4 lb cap, available through antique Ford restoration parts dealers, but I'm also sure they are to big in diameter for an MG rad. 7 lb is about as low I think you'll get new. Ebay might be your best bet. PJ |

Googled it. 4# lever cap its way from Summit Racing. Bud |

Fellows, I bought the NAPA part # 703-1696 for a grand total of $5.45 U.S. They did not have anything else any closer that might work when I went in their closest store. Obviously, there was no part # 703-1410 that Tom Norby found, rated at 4 pounds. The one I bought is a 7 pound cap I was probably too anxious to replace my old cap that had lost most all of the gasket protection. The one I bought's neck - the spiral coil attached to the inside of the cap - is about a half-inch shorter. Could someone educate me as to how dangerous and/or inefficient this new cap might be? I assume the engine might even run to a hotter temperature and increase the pressure too much. Thanks, Jerry |

Jerry Will this help? Can't have been more than 3 years ago. Temp on my engine perfect with this cap. Tom '54 TF ![]() |

Tom Norby, I will call NAPA store/stores today to see if I can still obtain the part # you were kind enough to provide, along with the barcode from your image. If obtainable, I hope they will exchange it for the one I just purchased. I'll let you know if I am successful. Many thanks, Jerry |

Bud, I'm curious as to the color on your car. Is that Autumn Red? PJ |

Jerry if the length isn't correct it may be next to worthless on the car. Even if it fits the lugs, if it doesn't compress against the inner surface of the tank, there would be no seal and no pressure. When the coolant warms up it will simply flow out of the over flow tube. |
MG LaVerne |
Indeed it is, PJ. I found it on the back side of the fuel tank. Apparently the car was repainted to white by the original selling dealer. But, they didn't disassemble the car before painting it. I was able to have the color reproduced by Sherwin-Williams. Bud |

Tom Norby - I found one! Only two available in Memphis - at NAPA's national distribution center's attached store. It took an hour and forty minutes due to a sortation and pick malfunction. LaVerne - When I saw that discrepancy on the cap I initially purchased, it gave me pause for concern. This 703-1410 is identical to the cap I am replacing. Again, thanks to you both and all the other comments. Jerry |
