MG TD TF 1500 - TF rear splash crease

I have an aftermarket rear splash for my TF and understand there is a crease or bend crosswise through the panel so that it will fit properly. If this is correct, can someone please let me know where it lies so I can duplicate it on my panel.

Hi Bob,

Where did you find an aftermarket rear splash for your TF?

JIm,

I purchased it from Abingdon Spares several years ago.

I always thought that thing was as flat as a pancake. Perhaps someone can take a picture of it for you.

The panel is perfectly flat but with a central depression to take the bottom of the spare wheel. I have tried to attach a photo but the system says the file is too large. I have never had this problem before. Possibly the cheapest place for a new panel is Metal Micky at Sportscar Metalworks. He makes many T Series body parts and his quality is good. His price for a new TF rear panel is £140 all in.

Mine has a barely noticeable even curve downward to the rear, and it just touching the rear spring supports. You need to hold a ruler against it to see. No crease.

I hope that crease was not supposed to be there! I worked hard to get rid of that crease ( I don't think it is supposed to be there but it could bend easily from putting some weight like a spare tire- on the back edge of the splash apron).

Thanks Bob, All they have is used now. They sent me one that looked pretty good but it had a lot of bondo in it so it went back, I already have one with lots of work and filler in it.

Jan, I tried to get a picture out of Sports Car Metal Works but to no avail.

I have made a new splash apron for my TF. I drew up a former and had it oxy- cut from 10 mm plate. I also had the sheet metal shape profile cut as well. I then clamped it to my former plate and tapped the edge over all the way around. I salvaged the wheel well from the original and welded it in. I have three spares if anyone is interested. I can get them flown to LA and posted from there.

The TF rear splash panel originally was not flat.
As Matt.M has eluded to,a slight curvature from front to back. Also, I have seen a very slight curve from side to side.
Panel beaters are notorious for erroneously
hammering it flat!! Geez!
Have not ever seen a 'crease' in an original
rear splash panel.

Cheers.

My rear splash panel is on the shelf. It's pretty close to perfect as far as I can tell. I'll try to get some photos of it today and post them later. Might be helpful. PJ

Here's the splash apron directly off of my 55 TF. My straight edge wasn't long enough so I used a piece of oak flooring to illustrate the curvature from side to side. The front to back curve is in the next photo. There is no crease in this apron. Not the greatest photos, but maybe they will give a better idea how it's supposed to be. PJ

Super picture. Thanks all for your inputs, now I need to get mine to look like that

Great picture Paul. I never knew there was a slope for th rear splash apron. I'm going to check today.

Paul, would you mind measuring the distance between the tip of the apron edge and the straight edge so I can compare.

Thanks,

Frank, From where the board sets across the tire well, from the each end of the splash apron to the bottom of the board is 9/16ths of an inch. Now whether that is correct from the factory, I wouldn't know, all I can say is the apron appears to have no abnormal bends or dents in it, actually, it looks a very nice piece to work with. I'm fortunate in a way, most of my car is in the same condition, other than the right rear fender which has a crack in it, possibly from a previous accident. When the apron is cleaned of old paint, it gets redone as is. PJ

Thanks Paul for taking the time to get the measurement.
