MG TD TF 1500 - TF Side Curtains--New

Got my side curtains and frames the other day and need a little help here. Checking the frames for proper fitting, I found I need to tweak them a bit as the top of the door frames are about 4 inches away from the windscreen frame at the top and about 1 inch at the bottom. That's no big deal to correct, but a photo of the position of the chrome mounting fittings would be most welcome. The frames were made on a flat surface and stand perfectly straight, they don't lean in to match the windscreen. I'll have to bend the frame where it goes into the door fitting on the rear of the doors. I had an old set of frames and that pin was welded on a slight angle, these new ones are straight.PJ

PJ. The following two pics are of an original TF. The pin at the rear has been slightly bent. Hope this helps. Cheers

Peter, on the repos they actually made this bracket shorter by 1/2 inch. I might have to modify them and make them longer to get the chrome fastener lower on the door where it belongs and off the hidem. There are no recesses in the brackets also to lock the frames in place. Like just about everything else on this repo stuff, nothing fits as it should and for the price we pay, it should fit properly. Oh well, so what else is new. At least I have something to work with. PJ

Sorry, here's where I'm talking about.

I plan to make the two larger side curtain frames PJ using a very rusted original pair of TD frames as templates. I've made a ply jig & cut the flat bar & some of the angle to fit but I'm yet to cut the tapered angle sections. I'm still wondering how I'm going to use my die grinder to cut the circular rebate you refer to above. The AM suppliers obviously couldn't figure that one out either so their solution was "just don't bother". "Near enough is good enough" simply isn't good enough for me. Cheers

Peter, just remember, the 2-bow TD, 3-bow TD and TF frames are all shaped differently. Jud

I'm up to speed on that Jud. The Moss installation instructions, though in serious need of the long promised update, do at least show these differences quite well. Cheers

These fittings?
2&1/2" from the door point.

And 1&1/4" due south of the metal edge.
All factory except the rubber strip.
Maybe best to position everything including the frame before you drill.

Matthew.

Thanks Matthew, Perfect illustration! Much appreciated! That will tell me just how far the frame mounts are off, if any. I sure didn't want to guess on locating those. PJ

I have just discovered that the new side mirrors from Moss that attach to the windshield set too far back to close the door with the side curtains in place! They need to be moved forward about 1/2 inch to clear. The photo shows the mirror in question. I can't come up with a solution other than changing the mirror it's self with a mirror with a different shaped mount. Just never gave this a thought. Hard to believe Moss never considered this. The mounting plate doesn't have an off center hole to switch it around.PJ

Paul161

I just remembered that I have a new set of fender mirrors in the shop. I'll check them and see if the mount will allow them to mount a little more forward. Shouldn't have to do this, but what else is new. PJ

PAUL
It appears that the mirror you show is not for windscreen mounting bu for fender (wing) mount.

Sandy, It is a package that Moss sells. It all comes in one box. Part number 165-513 & 165-514 Flat or convex 165-511 & 165-512. The mount is unique as it can be used with the windshield up or down and the mirror doesn't have to be removed to do so. PJ

Paul, I discovered the same thing when a summer storm hit at our club's picnic. Attach the side curtains, put up the hood and tried to shut the door. It was a "No Go." I did discover that I could move the mirror way out of position and just barely shut the door but then I couldn't see anything but sky in the mirror. Since I rarely install the side curtains or put up the hood, except for the challenge of re-aiming the passenger side mirror, this is just a minor inconvenience.

The Moss kit is just a fender mount mirror with a clever bracket for attaching to the windscreen pivot. It actually comes with the fender mount rubber fittings that, according to the installation instructions, you throw away. The rear view provided by the windscreen mounted mirrors is, IMHO, a huge improvement over that from the fender/wing mounted mirror.

Yeah I agree Jud, Slight inconvenience but they do look nice and I like them. I also will more than likely, rarely put the side curtains on. But I think a little more thought could have been put into the design as a whole to eliminate this. PJ
Paul161

I checked the ones I have I the shop and they are the same as the ones on the car, just don't have the unique mount. PJ
Paul161

Looks like the mounting plate needs to hook forwards?
Even my Lucas convex-glass accessory needs to have the 'knuckle' fully forward to clear.
