MG TD TF 1500 - TF SS Exhaust System

The currently-sold Moss stainless steel exhaust system for the TF has 3 pieces, but isn't there supposed to be a short tail piece (on the rear of the muffler)? It's not in the catalog photo of recent Moss catalogs, but it's there in photos in older Moss catalogs. Is it necessary? Or just esthetic? Any recommendations?

Also, does it make any difference what end of the muffler is forward or rearward?

Thanks! Tyler

I can't say about their current Tourist Trophy system they sell, but the Falcon System they used to handle (still do in the UK by the way) is a 3 piece system. The down pipe, followed by the muffler and finally the tail pipe. I can't say about how that compares to original systems but one difference I am aware of was the original parts were flanged face attached where as the what is available today are slip joints. On at the least the Falcon muffler , it makes no difference which way it is installed as it's a straight through design. The openings are offset though to allow you to roll the muffler closer or farther away from the floor.

For lack of a better picture, heres my Falcon SS system. The fit was perfect with no mods and the sound is quite nice. The flange on the down pipe was twice as thick as the old system I removed. The tip of the tail pipe was easy to polish up and look nice. I'm very happy with it! Don't know why you can buy it from Moss across the pond and not here, who knows, must be $$$ involved somewhere.

I figured out my mistake. It goes: down pipe to muffler to tail pipe. Not like the MGA (down pipe to pipe extension to muffler to tail pipe).

And speaking of T series exhaust systems, my Moss supplied mild steel system has lasted 42 years on my TD but now the silencer baffles must be going away as it is getting a bit louder than before. Does anyone sell just the silencer as a direct replacement? I have no need for an expensive complete stainless system. If not, maybe I'll just enjoy the new sporty noise.

The packing flew the coupe on my muffler after about 10 years . Which is how I know Moss UK still carries the Falcon stuff as that is where I bought a replacement. The Tourist Trophy is not a direct replacement for the Falcon. Might head to your local muffler shop John.

FWIW
I use the Bell SS system in my TF. The fit was perfect.
You can buy the set directly from the US distributor, British Stainless Exhaust, currently for $183.
They are even willing to sell a part, such as the muffler only.
Very easy to deal with.
