MG TD TF 1500 - TF starter switch disassembly
I've tried but cannot seperate the lock assembly from the lock body. What's the trick? I don't have the key. thanks, Tyler |

Don't think you mean the starter switch, how about the ignition switch? Get the number of the case and send to Pete Gron at petegron@yahoo.com for a key. |

First, twist the front bezel counterclockwise (looking at the front) until the tabs meet up with the notches on the body. Then lift the cover and knob free from the body. Second, remove the small brass nut at the back. Yes, it is soldered on but it will come off with a slight bit of pressure. That should separate all the major pieces. When reassembling, do not try to put it together all at once. First, insert the lock barrel sleeve, then the lock barrel receiver without the lock barrel. Note that the hole in the receiver is positioned DOWN. Then insert the ignition switch contact plate, spring, and pressure plate. Now put the nut at the back on. Then the contact plate, the insulating disks which need to be rotated to the most counterclockwise position. Follow with the spring, knob and bezel, making sure the knob inserts cleanly with the insulating disks. Hold the whole assembly together and give it a twist to reengage the bezel tabs. Under no circumstance should you EVER bend the bezel tabs. They will most certainly break. |

Lew - I don't think you are describing the TF ignition switch. I believe you need to insert a small pin in the hole on the side of the switch to remove the lock barrel - but the key needs to be inserted and turned to release the barrel. |

Tyler The ignition switch for a TF are as rare as proverbial rocking horse poo. Through a stuff up on my part I just happen to possess one with the key intact. I would have to sell at a premium price, if you are interested contact me. Graeme |

Oops, I missed the part saying "TF". I get so many requests for rebuilds or info on ignition switches, I just went off on my usual spiel. Sorry. |

Simple answer above! Get a numbered key from Peter Groh The correct key number is on the front of the switch This will rescue a very expensive and hard to find ignition switch for a few bucks. |
