MG TD TF 1500 - TF Stuck Speedo Cable!

I finally took my freshly restored TF for a test drive and found that the speedo isn't working. I thought I would reach under the dash and disconnect the cable from the speedo unit to see if it spins while driving the car. So, I loosened the knurled nut/sleeve from the cable and pulled on the cable to free it but it didn't move! What's holding it in the speedo preventing me from pulling out of the speedo? By the way, the cable assembly is a repop from Moss. Thanks, Lou

Lou,
There is a kind of clip on the end of the speedo inner cable to prevent it from going back down the outer cable? There might be one on the other end if you can't pull at the speedo end. Maybe a reverse install.
The other think I have seen is the pointer sticks to the rubber stop inside the gauge after a long sit.
I had to give mine a good thump once, to get the think to move.

I was able to pull the cable loose from the speedo then I checked to see if it was spinning when I drove the car. It wasn't rotating at all so I disconnected it at the transmission to find that the cable pulled out of the end piece. Either I had too tight of a bend in the cable causing it to bind and break or it wasn't secured tightly to the swedged end piece to begin with. Either way I'll replace the cable and will hopefully end up with a working speedo.
If I leave the cable off the car will it leak oil from the speedo pinion housing at the transmission?
Thanks
L Staller

Lou,
There is a slight chance you could have a little weep of oil but it should not be much. You could always leave the outer attached if you don't want oil on the garage floor.

I'd be hard pressed to find it on mine. :)

She marks her territory well does my Emma.
