MG TD TF 1500 - TF Temperature Gauge

My temperature gauge has stopped recording.
Can someone tell me where to get this re-energized/ refilled. I presume the ether has found its way out of the tube. I would prefer a Canadian contact if anyone knows one.
Is there anything else that could be wrong with the gauge?
Moss no longer carries these, are their any other contacts that I do not know about?
Cheers, Byron W.

The usual suspects I know are all US - Nisonger, North Hollywood Speedometer, ATP, hitworth Shop, etc. NOT Mo-ma!

I tried all the diy methods mentioned in the archives but couldn’t seem to get a big enough charge of the diethylether to stay in the bulb. I found a local small scale instrument repairer locally who had the bulbs in stock and the equipment to evacuate the system before doing the recharge as in the original system. This is actually done through the end of the bulb then a tapered pin is driven in before soldering over it.
Worth trying whatever the local equivalent of yellow pages is before heading south of the border.
Good luck

Mine packed up too this year, Byron. So that's two TF gauges on the duff in Canada. Maybe we can find someone to give us a two-for-one deal (in Canadian dollars, of course!).

The border being closed doesn't help either.

However, I'm about to install an aluminium radiator in my TF and wanted to do this as a single project. But that won't stop me from looking.

Here's a DIY, but I am not inclined to try - a bit too specialized for me ...

I can fix the gauge if only the ether has leaked out.
I am out here in B.C., Canada.

I repaired a TD gauge by purchasing a complete temperature gauge from NAPA auto parts. It cost me about $15.00. This gave me all the charge and tubing long enought fit the TD.
Do not forget to install the nut before soldering.
I useda pan full of DRY-ICE (available at local grocery store) to hold charge in bulb. Then soldered the line back to the gauge. Worked perfec. I had to relocate the needle to calibrate.
My cash out of pocket was less than $16.00 US.

Sanders

I did the same as Sanders. Didn't have dry ice but put the blub in salted ice water to contract the ether as much as possible on the doner. Cut the pipe and it actually fitted over the original TF pipe. Supported and sealed with heat shrink tubing.

The thing that I spend most time on was trying to set the temperature gauge. After lots of fiddling with containers of not quite boiling water that was cooling quickly I just ran the engine up to temperature, removed the needle and put it back on at the 'normal' point.

Because I live only 12 Kms from my US post box, its easy for me to send it off. But with the border closed, I'm tempted to send it to Hugh Pite. That's an offer I can't refuse!

The driving season is only going to last a few more weeks, so I'll take it out then. I'll send him some ether and some dry ice too.

Stand by Hugh ...
