MG TD TF 1500 - TF - Horn push button on scuttle

Quick question,

How is the horn push button secured on the scuttle? My grandfather relocated the horn to the under dash panel.

It looks to me that it was two sheet metal screws?? Or was it something else?

Sizes would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Frank

Two small screws but I believe the sheet metal was threaded to take machine threads

Thanks LaVerne. I suppose it is the same size screws used for the wiper knobs and the white lever for the directional switch.

4BA I think???

If anyone knows if they are phillips or slotted, please share. Thanks.

The horn button is mounted through two holes under the pad on the scuttle. The mounting area is a little fatter than the rest of the lip. My TF is LHD. The holes are drilled on the left side only. None on the right side, but the right side also has the fat mounting spot.

My screws have been replaced with brass slotted round head 6-32 screws and nuts, so I don't know the original fasteners.

Must have drilled the holes when the button was mounted.

Thanks Lonnie.

I have holes but unsure what size. I didn't really look too close since I didn't have a horn push button anyway and I was pretty much done for the day.

I suspect they are tapped threaded holes like Laverne mentioned. Unsure of the size and type of scew ( Phillips or slotted).

My TF RHD has holes on both sides,I utilised the LH ones to mount a horn button for the hidden washer pump.

Mine are Phillips heads, threaded holes. PJ

I do not know what was correct Frank. My car came to me with a push button mounted where the turn signal switch should be. I got a large handful of small machine screws given to me by a local machine screw shop . I dug through them until I found some for both the horn and the wiper knobs.

The correct small sizes of screw on T types are usually BA thread.

Speaking of wiper knob screws- anyone know the correct size and and a source for those screws?

Mr Barter,

See pic below. You can get these from British Fasteners.

Slotted cheesehead, 1/2" long, 40pitch.

Looks like a 4BA thread which also fits the threaded mounting holes for the horn push button on the rim of the scuttle.

This same screw also fits the white lever for the directional.

Thank you Frank. I don't know where I put those screws when I removed them.

My button which, like the rest of the dash I don't think has ever been apart. Self tapping screws. Also shows the red surfaces on this birch grey car.

If you can get long, thin self tappers use them. I couldn't find any and used 4BA nuts and bolts but getting the nuts started on the thread is dreadful job.

I have also seen Phillips Head self tappers used on relatively untouched TFs.

Thanks for the pictures and suggestions.

I'll follow up what I do when I get back on the car this weekend.
