MG TD TF 1500 - TF, new engine running very rich
Hi, my recently re-built TF 1250 is running VERY rich. I replaced the jets, gaskets etc, and it runs smooth at about 6 flats down on the jet adjuster. Lifting the needle slightly says it's running correctly but the exhaust is grey plus. I don't think it's oil as it doesn't smell like it. Starts off OK then fills the garage with fumes. . Any clues before I get asphyxiated? Regards, Don TF 4887 |

Hard to get a white exhaust with our fuels these days Don. Needles good? Oil fumes? Matthew. |

Hi Matthew, yes, the correct needles and no, I don't think it's oil, mind you I did give everything inside a liberal coating of oil during assembly. Regards, Don TF 4887 |

Does it drive and run well? Rich usually is very dark blackish exhaust, not gray. Gray would be oil or water? Remember the CO that will really asphyxiate you is colorless and odorless, so keep the door open to the garage. George |

Check the color of sparkplug ceramics, a muh better indicator than tailpipe. If I overly enrichened idle, there was black soot visible in the exhaust fumes, so I knew it was time to crank up the jet. |

New rings take a while to bed in so I wouldn't worry about a bit of smoke if you don't have several hundred miles on it yet. |

Hi all, the car is not on the road yet but on checking this morning the rear carb is flooded. I will re-check the needle and seat although it was OK earlier, this might be the problem. Thanks all, regards, Don TF 4887 |
