MG TD TF 1500 - Thin Radiator Webbing
For the last 40+ years we have been forced by the MG suppliers to use the wrong radiator webbing. Its way to thick and not only causes the hood to sit too high but perhaps could cause it not to latch properly in some rare circumstances. The current material is now the accepted norm and every supplier out there said theirs is as original. I have plenty of pictures that show other wise such as this picture from Gordon. But wait, there is currently hope, thanks to the internet... ![]() |

You can get 1/16" thick, 1/2" black rubber webbing at http://store20.prestostore.com/catalog.php?ref=rsrstore&dt=&pd=2143493&or=9733211 It comes in 10 foot rolls, enough to do two cars. Its cheap but the shipping is a bit expensive. The picture shows both the normally supplied webbing and the thinner webbing from www.rubbersheetroll.com. One side is shiny and the other side more of a dull, natural finish. So use it either way that suits you. ![]() |

Thanks Chris for this great information. I ordered some already from Abington Spares but not installed. I will return for credit and get a roll you recommend. |

Hi Chris, Yes! You are right in that the webbing supplied by many retailers is way too thick. I usually have had to buy a sheet of nitrile and cut the strip out. Great heads up on the site you found for the rubber stripping.I will try and order some. Cheers. Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Interesting.... I just bought some webbing for my TF last week from Little British. Just went out and measured with my caliper. It is 1/16th inch. Is that correct? Is the tolerance on the TF different from the TD?? Tom '54 TF |

Why is it that everyone calls it radiator webbing and yet they use rubber strip? I think cotton webbing should be used rather than rubber. I have put it on my car and the bonnet fits fine. It won't crack and will last for many years. There is a 10 yard roll of black webbing listed on Ebay for six dollars. |

Webbing-rubber is how it is referred to in the Service Parts List TD and TF. Matthew. |

Tom. correct. 1/16" All I get product from is near 1/8" |

I think TCs and earlier cars used true webbing, but pretty sure rubber is original for TD/TF. George |

Easy to make from scrap bicycle inner tubes. |

Now that is a great idea. |

On TFs originally, rubber was used for the bonnet rest. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Aramis"). |

Chris, I have a roll of the TF rubber strip material in the correct thickness, and have supplied it to many of our members over the years. It is 0.060 thick. If you use a thicker size, the front of the bonnet panels get a dihederal effect. I have some left and would supply it for free plus postage and package cost. Only the TF used rubber strip in one piece, with the strip I have it will be in 2 pieces. |

Chris, is the .062 the thickness and .500 width the size we need? PJ |
Paul sr |
I had the rubber made as a one-off part by a customer of mine. The original part that came off of TF6688 was 0.060" x .500 wide. |
