MG TD TF 1500 - Ticking Noise from Engine
There is a ticking noise from my engine at tickover (sorry about the pun). It either disappears when the engine is speeded up or the tick is masked by the general engine noise. What's perplexing though is I have listened to all parts of the engine with a stethoscope and by far the loudest tick comes from the balancer pipe part of the inlet manifold. Move to either of the carbs and the noise lessens as it does when I place the probe on the head. Anyone got any ideas? Jan T |

A loose restrictor in the balancer pipe? |

I have now got the car on the road and it is running really well apart from the tick! It is only audible when the bonnet is open. It is certainly loudest when I put the stethoscope in the centre of the balance pipe. Before I take out one of the core plugs can someone let me know if there is a restrictor in the balancer pipe. Jan, Yes there is a restrictor. It should be locked in with a pinch bolt.If you remove it the engine will run rough. I have seen the pinch bolt removed to fit vac gauges and also as tappings for servos. Ray TF 2884 |

If you have an aluminum valve cover, pop it off and look inside to see if the valve spring retainers are hitting it. You can shove it over way from the springs or do like many and grind a bit of the metal out where it taps. |

+1 for Jim... also if you just tightened the bejesus out of the oil cover it can make that sound. Blair |

If it's a metallic sounding tick, it could be a small leak at the exhaust manifold. Lonnie TF7211 |

It could be one of the push rod ends has loosened up. Peter 54TF |
