MG TD TF 1500 - Time for a new Tonneau and Tire Cover

Looking for the best naturally :-)

I use a full tonneau and the tire cover should look like the picture. I see that Moss has both and I could go that route. The last one seemed to shrink an awful lot even using cold water.

Christopher Couper

I suggest you go with the Hattz Stayfast fabric. I am really pleased with it, and have noticed absolutely no shrinkage of the material. Should work well on the tire cover as well.

I owned an auto upholstery shop for 14 years in the 70's-80's (before retractable hardtops) and found that Hartz Stayfast is about the best available... as long as you wash your hands before you handle it and keep water off of it because dirt leaves streaks, it shows every smudge. I can't tell you how many people came in looking for a way to get it clean again. If you're doing up a show car out of the rain, go for it. I'm running a driver so I'm going for black vinyl for now because I know we're going to get trapped in the rain.

At my age, I have no desire to shampoo a top and tonneau.

I installed the Moss Stayfast cover some years back. It is waterproof and cleans very well. A big blob of nasty black grease landed on it (from an 18 wheeler) , and it totally came out with some purple degreaser. Very easy to clean, has never shrunken and looks great 7 years later. George

George, what's the name of that purple degreaser if you know. One of the fellows in the local club if fighting the same battle. His fault, greasy hand print.

On this topic, can anyone explain why the spare tire covers are so darned expensive??
I would like to have one, but not for 2 to 3 hundred bucks.

Not sure what brand, Google "purple degreaser", most parts stores have it, as well as big box, just concentrated soap that is purple. George

Tom, I was thinking the same durn thing. Seems to me that it's cheaper to let the sun burn your spare tire... at $80-160 to replace it, it's cheaper than the cover... alternatively, you can get a cover for a 15 inch wheel for $17 on ebay....
hmmm...

Check with your local canvas awning shop, or even a boating canvas place to see what they would charge to make a tire cover,,,,,
Same with a tonneau cover,,, if you have and old one or can borrow one so they can use it as a pattern,,, You might be surprised at the price!!!

How about Purple Power?

I could not tell from the picture but it looks like you had a real canvas top. They do shrink and can be difficult to keep clean unless treated with a protector such as 303.

I have had Stayfast tops on my cars since 1999 and have found them to be excellent. I have them on a Z3, Mercedes and just last summer I converted my TD top and side curtains to that material.

By the way the material is NOT cheap. I was quoted $60 a yard. So perhaps the Moss price is not that awful.

I treat my tops every two years with 303. I also do my vinyl tops and bras with their vinyl protector.

Chris Topsonline has the best price I've found for Robbins Stayfast tops, tonneaus, side curtains and wheel covers. I'm about to place my order for a top and full tonneau shortly.

The purple degreaser I used is called Super Clean and it comes in a purple squirt bottle. Very effective but caution, only use it only with rubber gloves, it'll eat cracks in your fingers.

Bill I trird to find tire covers on the sight you mentioned. Did I miss it?

Thanks

Bill: When you get your tonneau I would love to come and see it and your progress too.
Christopher Couper

Chris, Im probably a month from ordering the top and tonneau as I a amidst the engine build and am having some set backs. Still need to finish paintwork on the wings and bonnet but the weather has been too cold for even my infrared lights to properly cure the paint. Waiting for my pistons from Arias to arrive this week and the final machining to be done. then the build should get back on track.

The interior I'm not comfortable doing and plan to take the car to San Leandro to have the upholstery, top and tonneau fitted

Your welcome to come to the shop anytime

Regards
