MG TD TF 1500 - Timing Mark Issue

I just received a new crankshaft pulley (433-470) from Moss. The timing marks (TDC) on the flanges are not aligned (see photo). I measure about 2.5 mm or about 3/32" difference.
How can I tell which notch is correct? Or even if either are correct? How much difference does it make to ignition timing? I don't think it would affect much else.
I realize a lot of stuff has to be correct to have accurate TDC designation: keyway on crank, keyway in pulley, pointer on timing chain cover, and notches on pulley.

I think I would just send it back :)

I'll go along with that. Too bad you can't send it collect. Bud

Having seen that photo .... if you swap it for another, you will wonder if the marks are BOTH wrong on the replacement!

When fitted to the car, take all spark plugs out, fit a long "peg" down #1 plug hole and GENTLY turn the engine both ways until the piston is stopped by the "peg". Be very gentle! Mark the pulley each way and your TDC is exactly half way between the marks.

Probably best to devise a "peg" which won't dig the carbon out of the unused thread at the end of the plug hole. An ideal "peg" might be an old spark plug with an extra inch of metal attached to the end. (Be sure the end can't fall off!!!) Or just use a piece of half inch wood.

Obviously, if the head is off, you would devise some other "piston stopper".

Just talked to Moss. I had sent pictures to Tech. They apologized for the inconvenience and will send another one after inspecting to be sure it is correct. They said to toss the one I have. So no shipping cost issues.
Good resolution but I'm delayed about a week.

There are lots of good, used ones on eBay - without cracks in the keyway - that sell for between $35-50. A quick bead-blast and you're ready to go.
