MG TD TF 1500 - Tire time. Choices seem to be less

Yup - its tire time for me. The old Kuhomo's are losing their grip!. Choices seem to be less and less.

I selected Kumho Solus KH16 Radial Tire - 155/60R15 . Will these fit?

I don't have the budget of a king, so Michelins are not in the cards. What other choices are there?

I've gotten very good service and performance from Vredesteins. I do a lot of spirited driving in the southern mountains.

Vredstein Sprint Classic are becoming very popular for a reason. Excellent tire and a good price. I have them on my MGA and my big Healey, both 165R15.

155/60 is a pretty small tire. I would look for at least a 70 profile.

Check with Longstone

I bought 4 xzx Michelins from them for about $100 each w/free shipping to US
(They may or may not still do this, but it was the best deal on new tires I ever got! The real plus was they needed no balance weights... I have been told that the Europe made Michelins are a better tire than the US made version, and after my experience I believe it to be true)

They arrived in about a week

I've ordered a lot of tires from Longstone, but shipping costs from Europe have gone through the roof! I tried to order from Blockley tires in the UK recently but the shipping was as much as the tires.

I have Vredestein tires on TD-4834. Dunlop radials on TD/c-8151. Royalton bias plys on TD-5779

Also running Vredestiens very happily. Look the part too.

I’ll join the chorus. Vredi’s on my car, too, and I like them very much. Lots of grip and they look fairly correct. And I do tend to drive my TD pretty hard....

One note, on edit: If you're gonna get new boots, get the wheels trued by a proper wheel shop. Makes a world of difference in terms of reducing the scuttle shake at 50-55 mph, which so many of our cars seem to have. The wheels are quite flexible and tend to be pretty bent up after all these years. Get them straightened before the boots go on, IMHO.

The Michelins are great - no doubt. But 5 tires is £500. Exchange on the Canadian dollar right now 1.68. sO MY 5 Michelins will cost $848 plus shipping 6.1% duty and our local taxes which will put them well over $200/tire.

Would still like to know if Kumho Solus KH16 Radial Tire - 155/60R15 will fit.

Have to do some more research on this.

Will no doubt fit the wheel but will not do you much good, the recommended 155/80R15 has 815 revs/mile, the more usual 165/80R15 has 795r/mile. Your suggested 155/60R15 has 904r/m so your engine will be reving some 14% higher at any given speed, hence 3000rpm will become 3420rpm. 165R15 is a standard tyre for a VW Beetle so should be available from most manufactures.

I'm quite happy with the Kumho Power Star 758 tires in size 165 80R 15 that I bought five of in 2008 for $260. Probably not made any more but they have never seemed to loose their grip with my sedate driving of 8000 elapsed mileage.

John, I think you're right. The Kumho Power Star 758 is the tire now on my car, and I haven't been able to find them.

Looking more and more like the Vredesteins will win out..

Thanks all, for your advice.

You guys in the US seem to be underserved. When I enter the size 165/80 R15 here I get 43 choices starting from about 60$ up to 600$.
For the kind of speeds and load on our MGs I don‘t think the brand matters much and I cannot see spending over 100$ for technical reasons. For looks - maybe. My latest ones are WW, although after about 3 years that has turned brown, so probably was not worth the extra $.

I Googled tire 165 80 R15 and a number of choices came up including Walmart. I was very surprised recently that Walmart even had the rare 155 80 R12 tires for my Austin America.

I've found some tires for my TF. These are Petlas Elegant PT311 165/80R15 87T.

They seem affordable.

Has anybody got any experience with these?

Gord, I can't speak for the Pelatas Elegant PT311 in the 165 80R 15 size but the Pelatas Elegant PT311 155 80R 12 tires on my Austin have been find for the last few years. Obtained from Walmart.com
John Quilter (TD8986)

Gord, just did the exact same thing last weekend. I put Nexem sb802 on my TF last weekend. So far, pretty happy, and $105 American.
Any chance of making the British Invasion? Would love to see you there.
