MG TD TF 1500 - Tool Box Felt

I have a roll of tool box felt from Moss that I haven't installed yet, which has large diamond shapes from the thread running through it, is this the correct design? Also, does the felt on the bottom run over the block of wood or is it wrapped separately? PJ
Paul S Jennings

It runs over the block of wood. If I recall correctly, it goes down one end, along the bottom and up the other end in one piece. I don't recall any diamond thread pattern in my original or the new felt that
I installed.

Should be 1/4" thick PJ, plain wool. Back & front are separate pieces & are installed first, once the wooden block is in place. The bottom & ends are one piece. Reason for this installation method is that the cutouts where the front & back pieces fit over the block are hidden by the end/bottom/end piece. The Moss stuff is incorrect. Cheers

I meant to add I found a supplier in Melbourne of good Aussie Merino woolen felt which cost me about $30 AUD for my car. I bought enough for 4 cars & sold the other 3 to local owners. Cheers

Paul
I bought a kit from Moss about six months ago. This white felt was 1/4 inch and had no diamond pattern.
I wonder if there was a mistake?

They seem to offer that from time to time. I had the same problem about 5 years ago. Send it back and either make them give you the un-diamond smooth one or call AS who will actually go look at the stock for you (at least they used to).

Paul, could you measure the block of wood, mine is missing. I assume it is 3/4" thick, but I need the width and the measurement to the right end of the tool box. Thanks in advance, Fred

I have the original block of wood. If I recall correctly, it was pine. The block is secured with a wood screw from under the tool box. I can get dimensions tomorrow.

The felt went over the wood block.
Frank Cronin

Interesting that your block was pine Frank. The wood block I found in my tool box was walnut which I found strange. Since ash was used for all the frame work it looks like the block would have been ash as well.

On the topic of felt, anyone know of a source for 1/4 inch thick BLACK felt in the US? I want some for my side curtain compartment and can't seem to find any. Moss wants too much for their kit.

Tom I used a thinner felt about 1/8" to line the side curtain box. Not sure how thick the original was but the 1/8" was very easy to work with & produced an excellent finish. I soaked the individual pieces in a slightly diluted exterior PVA solution & smoothed it into place. Cheers

I went to the local JoAnn Fabric and bought some black felt that worked well. It was likely thinner, but was easy to install and looks great. George

Peter, Could you give us the formula, brand name, for the solution you used for bonding the felt? I thought a contact cement was used, but not crazy about. PJ
Paul S Jennings

The PVA is pretty freely available under a variety of brand names PJ. I used Aquadhere exterior grade. It's a water based woodworking glue which looks milky in the container but dries clear. I made templates out of newspaper to figure out how best to fit the felt with the minimum number of pieces. As long as the joins are in the corners they are impossible to see. I also brushed a coat of neat PVA onto the surface before applying the soaked felt as described above. The felt can be stretched slightly so it fits perfectly into the corners. Once dry it looks like a single piece of felt. You shouldn't have any trouble. Cheers

I just use carpet adhesive from your favorite big box store.

Just took the felt I got from Moss out of the plastic bag it came in and found out what I thought was a diamond pattern was the protective covering that the manufacture placed over the felt roll. The felt is plain with no markings on it. Didn't measure it, but it looks to be about 1/8th inch thick. PJ

Should be 1/4"
Christopher Couper

Chris, it was rolled very tight in the plastic sleeve and appears to be expanding somewhat. I'll let it loosened up and see what it does. PJ

Like a fine wine :-)
