MG TD TF 1500 - Tool Roll expert advice needed

I purchased an MG TD tool roll which came with the roll as well. My problem is that all of the tools don't fit in the roll. The roll has 7 pockets which matches the pattern shown on Chris Couper's site. But the site also shows a 1953 TD roll with 9 pockets. That seems to make sense considering the number of tools involved. Does anyone have a pattern for a 9 pocket tool roll that matches the original. How was the Enots grease gun carried in the tool box. Did it have it's own wrap of some sort or just loose in the box? Anything incorrect or anything I'm missing? I know this is pretty esoteric stuff but I'm curious and I'm waiting for paint to dry.

Thanks

Tim I am sure you are aware that things are consolidated into one pocket. The tube spanners should nest inside each other for example and would be in a pocket with the Tommy. The flat spanners in one pocket and so on. I have no doubt that Peter will chime in as he is my "tool" mentor!
S Griffin

Thanks Simon. Yes, I'm aware of the nesting. But even then I don't have enough pockets. And thanks again for your previous information about the tool kit.

Tim you have mail. The 9 pocket design is correct for both the TD & the TF. The illustrated article that I've written & forwarded to you explains all. Cheers

Peter, as usual, very helpful. Once again, thanks for your assistance.

A photo of the tool roll commissioned by Peter for me after we compared notes. The detail is very accurate, my original roll is sitting underneath.

AFAIK the gun was loose in the tool box.

Matthew, thank you. Do you happen to have the dimensions of the roll?

Not in Peters article?

Matthew.

I didn't see it. I'll read it again.

Thanks

Matthew, I only saw the dimensions for the triangular pocket, the securing belt and the tool box felt. If the tool roll dimensions are there I plead old age in not seeing them.

Tim, Mathew's photo is a good reference for the tools as well. Note the small brass tube poking out of the leather triangle shaped pocket, that is the valve tool I had mentioned. Tiny little thing and not easy to find, most probably got lost? TD would not have had the knock off mallet of course. I have derived a great deal of pleasure absorbing information from Peter and hunting down the tools.
S Griffin

Hi guys. I didn't include the dimensions of the roll in the article as I was focusing on the tools themselves. I used the original figures supplied by Matthew to make a thin art board template which I then give to the seamstress who sews them up for me whenever someone requests one. I supply her with the bituminised hessian cut on the bias & to the correct size & shape, the leather shield shaped pocket & the 1/2" black bias binding. Once sewn up I then add the leather strap & buckle. I have made a change to the roll shown in Matthew's pic above based on a suggestion from Rob Grantham, who has a couple of my rolls. On the earlier versions I used black sound deadening paint in a spray can however I now use a bitumen based material, again in a spray can, which has the added bonus of darkening the underside of the hessian. This gives it a dark brown oily look which is very similar to, if not identical to the original rolls. Cheers

Simon, you are right, excellent information and visual references. I looked up the valve stem removal tool and one place had one for almost $80. WOW. I guess I can use the size of one of the tools in the picture that I know the dimensions of and scale off the size of the tool roll and the pockets. This is really down in the weeds stuff but I enjoy it.

Tim, I found my valve tool on ebay.co.uk there are things that are advertised on there that do not show up on the US site. Since my folks still live in the UK I can get stuff shipped to their house, so can deal with sellers that won't ship overseas. Peter is making me a roll as well, which I think will be on its way from Australia in the near future.
S Griffin

Thanks Simon. I did a Google search and didn't find much. If you happen to come across another valve tool or distributor screwdriver and gauge I'd appreciate your letting me know.

This came up on Facebook today and there are a couple of the Lucas guages on the auction. They seem to be relatively common. I have see several on eBay over the months. My car still had one with it when I purchased it.

I knocked up this sketch plan that should help.

Matthew.

M Magilton

The cardboard shows the cut of the hessian (burlap in the US). Note that the top and bottom edges of the cardboard are square to the fabric roll, the sides are cut diagonally. The weave should align with the top of the tool pockets (refer the cross-hatching in the plan). On either side are the remains of my two rolls. Measuring these are a bit tricky so I cant guarantee absolute accuracy with my measurements.

Detail of buckles and binding.

Peter, what brand/details for the bitumen paint?

Matthew.

M Magilton

Matthew the stuff I use now is Repco Sound Deadener Finish in a 400 gm spray can. Your pocket dimensions & observations above tally with my template. Cheers

Some really nice information shared on this thread. Thanks for posting the photos Matthew.
S Griffin

Simon, in that light, thanks for the info about the auction. In the past I've ignored the auctions here in Ohio that deal in MG paraphernalia. I won't in the future.
