MG TD TF 1500 - Top WIndow measurements

I have discussed the issue of the larger window that came with my new top with the supplier. They have talked to their top manufacture and they have been making the larger window on the top for 30 years.

They said they can make the smaller window top if they have the original measurements.

If anyone has an original TD top with the small window (or even a newer top with the small window), I would appreciate if they can measure the width and height of the plastic on the window. I would also like the distance from the bottom edge of the top to the bottom edge of the window.

Bruce came over yesterday to look at what I believe is an original 2-bow duck canvas hood. It measures 10” x 24” window. I believe this to be correct as it was put into storage in 1962. The belt webbing is correct but I can’t say with 100% confidence this is original since I didn’t own it when new. However, my confidence level is quite high.

My TopsOnline Stayfast hood on TD-4834 was sent to me with a 8-1/2” x 28” window I do believe this window size is not to spec.

Bruce hadn’t actually measured his NTG sourced hood when I spoke to him and I’m hoping he’ll post it on the forums for comparison.

Bill: Did it look like this?

Christopher Couper

So far I have received the following.

10 x 24 (4 1/2" off the bottom edge)
8 1/2 x 28
8 x 24
6 x 22 1/2 (6"off the bottom edge)

Here is a picture of the 6 x 22 and 8 x 24

I also included a picture of the back of the TD from the Safety Fast Video

To me, this looks very similar to the picture Chris posted.

Chris Re my duck hood. I believe it is the same but I can’t say for sure. My hood is still on a frame but the window is heat damaged and very stiff. It was difficult to get an accurate measurement but Bruce listed them above along with the distance to the flap edge. The window radius on the corners looks the same. I hate to manipulate it too much as the duck is fragile. I saved it just because I believe it’s original material for study purposes and a possible pattern

Here is an update.

My math skills have seen better years, so please correct me if I got this wrong.

I found 4 pictures of small window TD's taken from the back.

I measured the distance from my two spare tire rack tubes and got 17 inches.

Using my calipers, I then measured the distance of the tubes on the photos. I then measured the height and width of the window in the photo. I also measured from the lower edge of the top to the lower edge of the window.

I used the formula a1 b1
__ = __

a2 X

a1 c1
__ = __

a2 X

a1 d1
__ = __

a2 X

a2 = width between the spare tire tubes on my car
a1 = width between the spare tire tubes on picture
b1 = width of the window in the picture
c1 = height of the window in the picture
d1 = height of the bottom of the top to the window

From these I got the following

Height Width Height on top

4.76" 21.20" 5.30"
4.72" 21.70" 4.72"
5.10" 20.99" 6.40"
4.79" 21.60" 4.79"

As the window is slanted, the height measurements are probably smaller that actual. Getting exact measurements off a picture most likely will not give precise measurements

My best guess is the window was approximately 21.5" x 5" (more likely 6") The height of the window in the top appears to be 6"

My formulas did not load well in the above post.

a1 over a2 equals b1 over X (substitute c1 and d1 for b1)
