MG TD TF 1500 - Touching up chrome

Starting to disassemble my TD and am cleaning and waxing chrome parts prior to storage. I noted on my luggage rack, there are some chrome wear spots and a chip or two.

I know you cant just touch up with chrome, but are there any products you have used that would come close that I can use to touch up these wear spots?

Funny, I've been looking for something along those lines also. There is chrome paint. I've used it on small plastic parts with some success but never on metal chrome. There are products like this https://www.scalehobbyist.com/catagories/Paint_and_Construction/AKI00000477/product.php?gclid=CjwKCAiA3JrQBRBtEiwAN7cEGjEnWlEwLW6zyED9f6-EyZaIPf2oqxzru1EHdrcNftHjAeGYSQaXVhoCPoQQAvD_BwE This thread may be of help. http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/1037690/does-chrome-touch-up-paint-exist.html

Thanks Tim. I will give the touch-up paint a try and let the group know how it works.

I've recently gone through this for a non-automotive project and found that the Rustoleum metallic paint was the best of all the choices out there.

Normally I hate Rustoleum spray products - their nozzles tend to clog and their paint takes bloody ages to dry - but their metallic products are actually pretty good. They come out about as close to a real metal look as you'll get.

Here's a photo of what I used it on... I was trying to get a brass-look for the pulls on this oak cabinet I restored. Came out pretty good - it looked very much like real brass. I think their chrome comes out similarly shiny.

Just FYI, I was turning the old library card-catalog drawer into a tea chest for my son. The pulls were brass-plated steel, but the brass had nearly all worn off, hence my reason for wanting to refinish them. The cost of actually re-plating them was far too high.

I found a close-up photo of the pull I made before I shipped the box to my son...

Danged, you do good work Kevin. Bud
Bud Krueger

That does look good Kevin. I will try this on a few spots and post comparison pictures of the product Tim recommended.

Thanks, Bud and Bruce. I’ve always enjoyed working with wood, so it’s more of a labor of love. I applied several thin coats of golden shellac, rubbed it down with 0000 bronze wool and then finished it with several applications of cabinet wax.

The finishing on the pulls was made much easier by virtue of my blast cabinet... it does a wonderful job of bringing out the detail like the name on the pull. That being said, the finish on the pull was not polished prior to painting - I painted over the blasted surface. The paint would likely have come out with much more shine/gloss if I’d polished the metal first. I wasn’t going for a high-gloss look, though.
