MG TD TF 1500 - TRANNIE INSTALATION
A while back, there was mention of using a stud for a guide when installing a transmission,, I believe the most knowledgable Dave Braun posted it,, was it an exhaust Stud? what thread? A fellow Club member was asking, and I can't find it in the Archives. British By The Sea June 1st SPW |

Maybe a head to manifold stud? Same thread. George |

I used to work in the facilities section at our local Ford Assembly Plant (soon to close) and we used to make one hundred pins at a time for the guys on the line to help assemble the transmission to the block. Some old methods are still the best. |

I put it up, but it originally came from Dave. It's done with the studs that secure the manifolds. You could use either end, the thread's the same. Bud

The club member asking about this does not have spares,, what is the thread size he shoud ask for at the hardware store????? |
STEVE WINCZE |
The hardware stores in Santa Cruz don't even know what whitworth means! LOL Using one or 2 of the studs out of your head for this job shouldn't hurt them, as long as you can get them out easily (like with double nuts). chuck |

They are not Whitworth or even BSF. They are fine thread metric 8 X 1.0. |

Instead of using somewhat expensive studs I just cut of heads of 8 X 1.0. bolts and tapered the shanks on a grinding wheel and used the bolts as guide ons when positioning transmission .I only used the two upper positions and was able to straddle the transmission while stepping through frame and quite easily and surprisingly replaced trans |

There are 4 manifold studs. One can readily borrow two of them. Bud |

And I got the idea from our own Dave DuBois, who was kind enough to pass the hint onto me when I was installing my gearbox. They are indeed French Metric 8x1mm, close enough to today's standard not to matter. Remember, the engine factory was the old Hotchkiss concern, and William Morris was loath to dispose of all that tooling. Instead, he commissioned metric threaded fasteners with BSF (or Whitworth, one size smaller) across the flat (AF) heads. ![]() |

It's more fun if the gearbox looks like it is moving into place...
