MG TD TF 1500 - Transmission Leak

Happy New Year to everyone. I have a leak (a few drips) from the cluster shaft bolt located about 6 inches aft of the transmission drain plug. Abingdon Spares calls it the 'layshaft bolt'. It holds the cluster shaft in place. I am clueless regarding transmissions. Can I remove the bolt enough to use some thread-locker or gasket sealant and re-install without worries about not being able to get the bolt back in? Of course the car would not be moved during the process.

Thanks much

The bolt you are referring to acts as a dowel and the end, which is unthreaded, fits into a hole in the layshaft spindle and stops it moving. The only problem you could have is oil dripping into you eye as you lie on your back under the car! I can recall the bolt from when I rebuilt the gearbox in my TD a few years ago but cann't remember if there was a fibre washer under the head. A smear of Wellseal, on dry threads would do the trick. It would be a good idea to have a look at the casing though to make certain there is no crack.

Yes you can, but expect some leakage. I would use a fiber washer to try to stop the drip; it's going to be messy trying to use sealant on an area that is pretty much soaking with oil.

A copper washer is used for sealing. Here's an image of a new vs. worn layshaft bolt. Bud

Jan, Tom and Bud-- Thank you for your input. I will let you all know how things turn out and how much trans fluid I swallow.

Jan and Tom-- Thank you again for your help. It was a much easier job than I thought it would. I backed out the bolt about 3/16", added some gasket sealant and put the bolt back in place with the safety wire. Took it for a drive and all was fine with no leak at all. I guess I didn't back the bolt enough to have any leakage so it was a very job.
