MG TD TF 1500 - Transmission oil ideas?

Much discussion all around about oils for the engine and differential in T-Types, but not much about transmission fluids. Curious what other's might be using if something different than the originally suggested 140W gear oil. It is a TC if that matters. I found GL4 140W at O'Reilly auto parts, and that is what is in gearbox and diff now summer and winter in California. I can't say there is anything at all wrong with how it shifts now, but curious what others may have found.

You might check the archives. I think that what you'll find is a strong sense of favoring RedLine's 75W90 as an excellent transmission lubricant. Bud
Bud Krueger

Agree with Bud. Redline has really made the transmission shift a lot nicer.
Bruce Cunha

I purchased some redline and used it in my TD. I had some left over and used it to lubricant the back gears on my lathe. The reduction in gear noise was dramatic.

My son was having shifting issues on his early Jeep Wrangler. On my advice he switched to Redline. Problems are gone.

The expert who re-ratioed my diff said that his warranty would be invalidated if I used any lubricant other than Redline.

David, Did he give any indication that he was a Redline dealer. LOL!
Sorry, I just had to say that!
I just ordered 3 quarts of the stuff! Grin. PJ

I see a GL-4 and a GL-5 in Redline 75W90, are both OK, or should I look for one in particular.

GL-4 is available at Amazon for $16.89.

David, To my knowledge, you want GL-4 for our older transmissions. Someone else might have a different opinion. PJ

The search that I did in the archive strongly suggested Redline MT 90 for the gearbox & Redline 75 W 90 for the diff. So that's what I used. Dunno about using the 75 W 90 in the tranny though as Bud suggests. Yet to drive the car so I can't offer a personal opinion other than to suggest that a mate who used the MT 90 in his noisy box reported it made a considerable difference to both noise & ease of operation. Yes use GL4. Apparently GL5 can attack brass synchro rings in the gear box.

Dave

The archival consensus seemed to say that MT90 is the best for the gearbox and the 75W90 for the differential. That's what I've been using for a long time. Bud

It depends whose GL5 it is. Millers is ok to use in such applications (they claim).

Now I am totally confused, on the Redline website MT90 75W90 is for a manual transmission, then there is only GL-5 for differentials.

Like to see whay John Twist has to say.

P G Gilvarry

Here's what John Twist recommends for diffs. (Stated at GoF-South 2016 in Ocala FL, or at MG2016 in Louisville.)

John Twist says to use GL-4 hypoid gear oil, not GL-5, because of bronze/"yellow" parts in diff.

He buys Sta-Lube API/GL-4 Multi-Purpose Gear Oil SAE 85W90 for hypoid gears from NAPA.

Sta-Lube SL24229 - 1Qt $ 19.30 (NAPA)
Sta-Lube SL24239 - 1Gal $ 64.38 (NAPA)
Sta-Lube SL24259 - 5Gal $310.96 (NAPA)

Thanks Lonnie, considerably cheaper at my nearby NAPA, Quart is $10.49, needs 2.7 pints, so 2 bottles will do the job, and enough to top up if it leaks! (It doesn't)

Gearbox uses a lot less, 1.5 pints so just 1 quart bottle of Redline MT90 75W90.

Currently they have Penrite products from Australia.

What are the yellow parts in the diff? Like many others, I have Redline 75W90, which is a GL5 oil, in mine.
